THE PAEKAKARIKI VASE (ASSOCIATION CROQUET)
Played between Waikanae, Plimmerton and Paraparaumu. The wooden base has two inscriptions:
No. 1 tells us that The ‘Paekakariki Cup’ was presented by G.C. Sherwood for an annual competition within the Paekakariki Club in 1940. That Club disbanded around 1945.
No. 2 informs that in 1947 the cup was re-branded as the ‘WCA Paekakariki Vase’. It was re-presented by Robin Hogg and Ashley Heenan for a challenge between the Kapiti Coast clubs. Under this re-branding the Vase has been contested 16 times and PCC has now won it 8 times.
The three competitions are worked out each season by the 3 club captains, venues for the matches rotate:
- Association Doubles.
- 2½ hours plus regulation 8.
- Played in the 4 handicap grades [0-3, 4-9, 10-16, 18-24 or 0+, 4+, 10+, 18+ or A Grade, Intermediate, B Grade or C Grade].
- Each club has a team of up to 8 players.
- Each doubles pair plays the other 2 clubs in their grade.
- The winner is the club with the most wins or, if equal, the most hoops.
- Played in March
2022 Waikanae defaulted as we did not have enough players to participate. The winners were Plimmerton
