THE PAEKAKARIKI VASE  (ASSOCIATION CROQUET)

Played between Waikanae, Plimmerton and Paraparaumu.  The wooden base has two inscriptions:

No. 1 tells us that The ‘Paekakariki Cup’ was presented by G.C. Sherwood for an annual competition within the Paekakariki Club in 1940.  That Club disbanded around 1945.

No. 2 informs that in 1947 the cup was re-branded as the ‘WCA Paekakariki Vase’.  It was re-presented by Robin Hogg and Ashley Heenan for a challenge between the Kapiti Coast clubs. Under this re-branding the Vase has been contested 16 times and PCC has now won it 8 times.

The three competitions are worked out each season by the 3 club captains, venues for the matches rotate:

  • Association Doubles.
  • 2½ hours plus regulation 8.
  • Played in the 4 handicap grades [0-3, 4-9, 10-16, 18-24 or 0+, 4+, 10+, 18+ or A Grade, Intermediate, B Grade or C Grade].
  • Each club has a team of up to 8 players.
  • Each doubles pair plays the other 2 clubs in their grade.
  • The winner is the club with the most wins or, if equal, the most hoops.
