While the wine industry appears to be the major player for the region people are often surprised to discover it is actually aquaculture that is the largest sector primarily Greenshell mussels, along with oysters, salmon, paua, and fresh water crayfish.
While not obvious to the regions visiters sheep and cattle farming is also a major contributor, including high country stations specialising in finest merino wools. Forestry is also a major industry with significant exporting both logs and timber to overseas markets.
