Timeline

Early 1980s 

WAFC began operating in Woodville, initially focusing on senior teams. Junior teams were introduced around 1987. Following extensive fundraising, the club established its current clubrooms at Hockey Park, Grant Street.


1990s 

During the 1990s many families and players moved away, making it difficult to field senior teams. WAFC’s senior teams last competed in 1996.


1996 – 2010 

The club shifted its focus to junior teams competing in Manawatū competitions. Local football advocate John Henderson played a vital role in keeping football alive in Woodville during this period. His passion and commitment were instrumental to the club’s survival and ongoing presence in the community.


2010 

WAFC became an incorporated society and began competing in the Dannevirke Junior Football competition.


2012 

WAFC affiliated with Central Football and New Zealand Football, fully implementing the Whole of Football programme, starting with the First Kicks (6 years and under) grade. That same year, the club won the Participation Initiative of the Year Award at the Manawatū Grassroots Sports Awards.


2014 

WAFC, Dannevirke Sports Club, and Pahiatua Junior Football formed the Tararua Football Hub, creating a more coordinated approach to football across the district, particularly for the Mini Football programme (ages 7–12).


2015 

With support from Kiwisport funding, the club delivered a six-week football programme in local schools.


2016 – 2020 

The club focused on delivering the New Zealand Football Junior Framework for tamariki aged 4 to 14 years.


2021 

WAFC fielded an Under 16 youth team in the Manawatū Competition for the first time in many years. This success has continued, with players progressing through the club’s established football pathway.


2023 

The re-establishment of a senior men’s team, the Spartans, competing in social football in Manawatū 3rd Grade.


2024

​​​​​​​The introduction of a women’s team, Waireka, following increased participation from women in summer 7-a-side football.
