Mobberley Claims Historic Fourth Junior Title

The South Canterbury Junior Singles Champion of Champions final delivered a classic "Town vs. Country" showdown this weekend, as West End’s Nigel Mobberley secured a historic victory over Temuka’s Mick Ross.

In a battle between the regions two most in-form development players, Mobberley proved why he is a force to be reckoned with, claiming the Hanan Cup and becoming the first player in South Canterbury history to win the Junior title four times - a record many believe may never be broken.

A See-Saw Battle

The final began as a cagey, point-for-point affair. After four ends, the players were locked at 2 - 2. However, the momentum shifted when Mobberley picked up a decisive four-shot haul, surging to a 12 - 5 lead by the eighth end.

Ross, representing the Country contingent, refused to go quietly. Delivering several "beauties" to claw his way back into the match, he picked up a three on the 14th end to narrow the deficit to a single point, with the score sitting at 14 - 13.

Clinical Finish

With the pressure mounting, Mobberley found another gear. Over the final five ends, he displayed remarkable consistency, scoring five unanswered singles to seal the match 21-17.

The victory marks a return to the top for Mobberley, who noted he lost his club final last year to Neville Herbert but had previously won the title three years running. His path to the final was anything but easy; he narrowly escaped a semi-final thriller against Kia Toa’s Paul Brohan, scoring six consecutive shots to win 21-20.
