Our purpose

The purpose of the Harbour Hockey Charitable Trust (HHCT) is to:

  • develop and maintain the facility (and any other facility in the North Harbour region) for the benefit of the general public, and for the promotion and support of participation of the sport of hockey throughout New Zealand;
  • provide special structures and facilities (community pavilion and playing facilities) for the benefit of the aged and/or disabled and general public;
  • foster and provide social welfare activities for the benefit and in the interest of the public;
  • provide facilities for primary, secondary and tertiary students and institutions to enable coaching, educational seminars, conferences, sports facilities, and sponsorships and grants as the trustees see fit

The facility is well used by a cross-section of the community, and by working closely with North Harbour Hockey (the facility manager) we ensure that many different organisations, schools and sporting groups can have access to the facility where possible. We have up to 12,000 visitors per week involved in community and sporting activities.

Over recent years, the HHCT has worked with North Harbour Hockey and Hockey New Zealand to create the National Hockey Centre, New Zealand’s premier hockey venue. In recent years it has hosted three major international hockey tournaments including the 2017 FIH Women’s World League Finals.  It is also a New Zealand host venue for the FIH Pro League, an annual international competition featuring the world’s top-ranked hockey nations.

Creating a National Hockey Centre

In 2014, the HHCT entered a partnership with North Harbour Hockey, Hockey New Zealand and Sport New Zealand to upgrade its existing facility and create a National Hockey Centre. This transformation is benefiting users on three fronts:

  1. The expanded and enhanced community facilities will support the needs of North Harbour’s growing community;
  2. Our national teams (the Black Sticks) will finally have a permanent hockey home with purpose-built premises for Hockey New Zealand’s high performance programme; and
  3. Our world class international venue will showcase hockey and help promote growth at grass-roots level.

After making significant progress towards raising the funding required for the upgrade project, HHCT learnt in 2015 that the existing facility needed to be relocated to a new site. This was due the NZ Transport Agency’s Northern Corridor Improvements (NCI) project to build a new motorway connection between SH1 and SH18, which required part of our existing site.

After nearly five years of planning, consenting, design, construction and fundraising, our new facility at Rosedale Park West was officially opened by the Minister of Sport Grant Robertson, in December 2019. Thanks to the ongoing support of our funding partners, HHCT was able to complete the planned upgrade and create a future-proofed National Hockey Centre for the benefit of the hockey and wider community.
