Otago Amateur Weightlifting Association Incorporated (OAWLA) is the incorporated society responsible for administering and promoting strength sport across Otago and Southland.
OAWLA brings together two provincial sporting bodies under one governance structure:
Otago Weightlifting – Olympic Weightlifting (Snatch & Clean & Jerk)
Southern Powerlifting – Powerlifting (Squat, Bench Press & Deadlift)
Together, we provide competition pathways, athlete development, coaching support, and community opportunities for lifters of all ages and abilities.
New Zealand Powerlifting Federation (NZPF) International Powerlifting Federation (IPF)
Weightlifting New Zealand (WNZ) International Weightlifting Federation (IWF)
Our purpose is simple: to grow and strengthen the sports of Weightlifting and Powerlifting in the lower South Island.
We achieve this by:
Delivering safe, professionally run competitions
Supporting athlete development from grassroots to national level
Providing coaching and technical education opportunities
Creating inclusive, welcoming training environments
Promoting strength sport within our communities
Whether someone is stepping onto the platform for the first time or representing the region at national championships, OAWLA exists to support that journey.
Otago Weightlifting is the provincial body responsible for Olympic weightlifting within the Otago region.
We provide:
Sanctioned provincial competitions

A pathway to national events
Support for youth, junior, senior, and masters lifters
Our focus is on technical excellence, long-term athlete development, and building a strong team culture.
Southern Powerlifting is the provincial association responsible for powerlifting across Otago and Southland.
We:
Organise sanctioned provincial competitions
Support lifters qualifying for national events
Promote fair, drug-tested competition
