SPECIAL OLYMPICS OTAGO - POWERLIFTING
Powerlifting is a strength sport made up of three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. Training focuses on safe technique, confidence, and building strength over time.
TRAINING
Special Olympics Powerlifting athletes train twice a week at Strength Metrics Gym.
Tuesdays: 6:30pm–7:30pm
Thursdays: 6:30pm–7:30pm
GETTING STARTED
You can start training first. When you and the coach agree you’re ready, you can enter a novice competition to see if competition is right for you.
We take part in Special Olympics ribbon days and attend other events across Otago and Southland when available. Athletes can also compete in mainstream events.
Special Olympics powerlifting competitions are governed by Official Special Olympics Sports Rules, which are based on New Zealand Powerlifting Federation rules, unless there is a conflict.
Special Olympics competitions also use divisioning so athletes compete in appropriate groups based on ability (and weight where relevant).
After your first competition, if you wish to continue competing, athletes will need to:
Join Southern Powerlifting and NZPF; and
Pay entry fees to each event.
Typical costs are:
Gym fees: approximately $600/year (we try to subsidise where we can)
NZPF/Southern Powerlifting Membership: up to $145/year depending on your age - check here
Event entry: approximately $50 per competition, more for national competitions.
