Grades
New members start off as white belts (10th Kyu), and then progress through the ranks as illustrated. Every effort should be made to prepare for their first grading.
Currently graded students should attend each Grading to be assessed for their next rank. The Head Instructor will determine from the Grading itself and the effort put in by the student during the Term(s) leading up to the Grading whether or not they have fulfilled the requirements laid down in the syllabus. Students should work hard during the term and make a determined effort to be ready for the Grading. They must not grade themselves by not attending because they thought they weren't ready. It is incumbent on them to be ready.
Gradings are held twice per year, around the middle and end of the year.
Grades should not be mistaken for tournament placings eg. 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
Grades awarded to students under 18 years of age are accorded Junior status.
On reaching the age of 18, they must then present for grading to the equivalent senior grade rank, subject to all syllabus requirements being fulfilled.
In exceptional cases confirmation of the senior rank by the Head Instructor may be sufficient for an upgrade to senior status.
Students transferring from other styles/clubs will retain the rank of their previous style, however there is no guarantee that they will be given equivalent status in Rembuden Okinawa Goju Ryu, as this is subject to the degree that they have assimilated into Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate.
It is a mandatory requirement that Syllabus requirements are met for an Okinawan Goju Ryu Grade to be awarded.
Black Belt Gradings are by invitation only - the student must ensure that they have fulfilled both the theoretical and practical requirements of the Grading Syllabus. A copy of the requirements is available, on request, to all 1st Kyu Brown Belts who have been training regularly.
For some the Black belt Grade is considered the ultimate grade to achieve, however aspirants are reminded, that this is only the beginning, and only a grade to reflect a mastery of the basics, and an invitation to become a "serious" student of Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate.
