FORTY YEAR CELEBRATIONS - 13th December 2016

Just before Christmas, there was a special celebration in Dunedin.

Forty years have galloped by since the pony club started in the Greater Green Island area of Dunedin. Tall tales and laughter abounded on 13 December 2016 when the Club hosted members and friends of the Saddleview /Fernhill Pony Clubs.  Also in attendance were NZPCA Board Member, Emma Barker; Otago Southland Area President Glennys Trounson; and Dunedin District Commissioner Su Malthus-Reed.

Best wishes were received from local Dunedin MPs Dr David Clark and Ms Clare Curran and Mr Scott Weatherall Saddle Hill Community Board Chair

Now tucked away at the end of Flower Street in the Dunedin suburb of Fairfield, Saddleview Pony Club (then known as Fernhill Pony Club) began in 1976 in the nearby suburb of Abbotsford. The physical location may have changed but the sentiments have stayed the same – offering children and young people the opportunity to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sporting activities connected with horses and riding.

It was a warm summer evening and members from 1976 to 2016 spoke of riders, horses, events, pony club camps, and last but not least, the coaches.

The Saddleview Committee of Kirstin Bright, Kathy Fuller, Tracy Higgan, Nicki Howie, Steve Morris, Su Malthus-Reed, Louise Lawrence, and Tracy Perry were thrilled to put names to faces that had come through in the history, photos, and pony club records of yesteryear.

Today’s Committee salutes those that came before them, the history of the Club, and the efforts put in by so many people over the years.  The celebration was a great way to thank those who worked tirelessly and hard to develop the Pony Club's 'home' from a once boggy/swampy site to a beautiful facility. Thank you to all the trusts, foundations, organisations, and individuals that have financially supported this facility to be enjoyed by the community and supported Fernhill and Saddleview riders in their quests to travel afar and represent us with pride.
