SVPC Junior Day – Sunday 10th March 2024

SVPC Jumping STYLE competition Rules and Information

This competition is being based on show hunter ‘principals’, but not being run under exact show hunter rules.  The rules are as follows:

  • Riders may have a support person in the ring with them, but they must remain at least 2 metres away from the rider and shall not lead a horse over any jump
  • Riders can walk the course – the course plan shows the direction each jump is to be jumped
  • There will be no start or finish flags
  • Riders enter the ring and can ride a circle or two before commencing their round.
  • Salute the judge prior to approaching your first fence
  • Judging will commence on approach to the first fence and conclude after completion of the last fence
  • Riders will complete their round and be given a mark out of 10 for jumping style over each fence ie. the style/how well the horse jumps the fence.  Disobediences (refusal, hesitation to jump) and rails will result in a lower score for that particular fence
  • At the completion of the round riders will be given a mark out of 20 overall for their riding/execution of the round and effectiveness of their riding, position etc. Where a rider deviates their horse from the designated track (circling/crossing tracks), presents their horse poorly to the fences (poor corners, lack of straightness) etc, it will result in the rider receiving a lower rider score.
  • The combination with the highest points shall win the class.
  • 3 refusals over the entire course will constitute elimination.  If eliminated the rider may jump one fence prior to leaving the ring to ‘finish on a good note’
    • NB as this is a junior/inexperienced training day, the judge can allow you to complete the round after 3 refusals, only if rider safety and/or horse welfare is not identified as an issue, but you will not be eligible for any placings in that class.  A support person in the ring may assist the rider further, to complete the round to allow the rider to finish on a ‘good note’.
  • A rider fall will constitute elimination for that round and the rider must leave the ring unmounted and not remount.  They must present immediately to the first aid area for checking over by the nominated first aider on site.
    • A rider may compete in a subsequent class/es if once checked by the onsite First Aider, they are determined as safe to remount and ride.
  • The scores are given by the judge at the time of judging, the judge’s decision is final on the day and out of courtesy and respect, no correspondence shall be entered into.

Rider tips on achieving good style jumping and giving your horse every advantage to jump and score well

  • Ride wide deep corners
  • Use the corners to balance and settle your horse and maintain rhythm
  • Ride straight to and away from the jump
  • Ride to the middle of each jump
  •  Sit still and let the horse do it’s job
