New Zealand Junior Singles and New Zealand Secondary Schools Singles 29 & 30 August

South Otago's Daniel Cook won two of his four matches in qualifying to end up competing in the Plate event of Saturdays New Zealand Junior Singles finals. In the plate, a first round win saw him progress to the quarter finals. Unfortunately he went down 13 - 5 in this match.Daniel was also selected in the Southern Zone tournament team that play their Northern counterparts that night. He paired with Cameron Ellis from South Canterbury. The overall result saw Northern win 8 - 4. Unfortunately Cameron and Daniel were beaten in both their matches.A good start to qualifying on Sunday in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Singles event saw Daniel win three out of four and make the main event along with twenty seven other qualifiers.Daniel won his first up match against Nicole Bennett from Hawera High School, only to draw last years NZ Junior Singles champion from Otago (playing for Logan Park High School) Jonty Horwell, in the second round. Jonty had the better of this match and also ran out the eventual winner of the tournament.A solid effort from the South Otago representative in all three events.

South Island vs North Island Test

North Island  25    South Island  23

South Otago players Robert Wilson and Kathryn Edgar performed well all tour but were unable to bring back the Inter Island Trophy as the South went down in a gallant effort last weekend. Both players put together solid performances in the test and the South Island showed that they were there to play.

The Ladies Triple, with Kathryn playing in the middle, had three great matches against their Northern rival but unfortunately were narrowly beaten in all three games. They fought hard to last end in each game but the Norths steely resolve proved a hard nut to crack.

The Mens Triple, skipped by Robert Wilson had three titanic matches against their counterparts, coming out on top in all three games to sweep the set and take their medals in this discipline. This is Robert's second Inter Island medal in two years with the Mens triple.
Congratulations to both of our players on their selection and the superb effort they contributed as part of a resurgent South Island team.

South Otago Open Pairs
Cross Recreation Centre, Sat 30th May
46 teams from all around the Southern region contested the first ever event played in the Cross Recreation Centre, venue for 2016 South Island championships.

By most accounts the floor played reasonably true, with mat speeds being consistant and no real 'gremlins' discovered by any of the teams during the day. The only glitch encountered was the cold due to the last minute unavailablity of hired heaters ... and the 'beautiful' Balclutha weather outside!

All in all, the day was a successful trial run which gave the Organising Committee a valuable insight to what worked well and what needs to be tweaked prior to next year.

South Otago v Southland results
Saturday 23rd May at Balclutha

Southland retained the Friendship Cup defeating South Otago 130 to 94 in Balclutha.

A change in format this year saw both matches of each discipline being played together as one round, instead of the three games of each discipline being one 'round'. Our southern neighbours got off to a good start in the first two Fours matches, jumping out to a decent lead which they maintained through the ensuing Singles and Pairs rounds.

South Otago players competed very well in the Singles and Pairs, but unfortunately the slow start of the Fours put them on the back foot right from the outset.

Top performer for the home team was debutant Aaron Harrison with a solid 5 wins from his 6 matches. There were also strong showings from team mates Robert Wilson and Colleen Fenton, who had 4 wins and a draw - as well as Graeme Thompson and Chris Moffitt with 4 wins and Alanna Preddy, 3 wins and 2 draws.

Full results from the days play are available under the 'Representative Teams & Results' tab.
