NZ Mixed Pairs

While Biddy Craig and Ross Agnew finished up with 8 losses from their 8 matches at the national Mixed Pairs finals, they were competitve right throughout the day and represented us and Zone 6 well.

A big thanks to all those people who helped to get them up their by coming along to the fundraising movie night. 👍

Blossom Festival Tournament

A big thanks to the Central Otago Association and their members for running yet another great Blossom Festival tournament. Our South Otago teams all had a great time and came away with a couple of pretty good results along the way too.

Geoff Reeves, Kathryn Edgar, Dawn Reeves and Phyllis Peek were runner up in the Fours to Dave Philpott, Jo Hill, Greg Hill and Bev Diamond of the Hornby Club, Canterbury. Phyllis at age 91 was presented with a bouquet of flowers from the Central Otago Association, recognising her continued support in attending her 40th Blossom Festival tournament!

Alanna and myself played Matt Begg and Marc Johanson in the Pairs final, coming out the eventual winners 13-5.

Blossom Festival tournaments a fantastic weekend away with awesome hospitality, great competition and all held in a beautiful part of the South Island - Central Otago. If you have the chance to get along to it in the years to come, it's a weekend well spent 😉

NZIB 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award celebration

There was a great turn out at the South Otago Town & Country Club last night to acknowledge Colleen Fenton, 2018 NZIB Volunteer of the Year.

Around 55 local bowlers, former bowlers and well wishers were there to pay tribute and congratulate Colleen on receiving this prestigous honour.

South Otago Indoor Bowls Association President, Gordon Duthie made mention and gave testimony to Colleen's outstanding service to Indoor Bowls in our region, especially noting her dedicated work as Association Treasurer for over 28 years. Gordons words were followed and endorsed by David Edgar from NZIB Executive and Stephen Preddy, President of the Owaka Sub Association.

Colleen was very gracious and humble with her reply and being the recipient of this award, giving thanks to everyone who came along to the evening and to those, present and absent, who had been a part of her indoor bowls journey over the many years.

A thoroughly deserved accolade to a tireless servant of Indoor Bowls in South Otago.

NZIB 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award

Congratulations Colleen Fenton, awarded 2018 Volunteer of the Year at the NZIB Annual Meeting on Saturday 1 December in Wellington 😃👍🏅

Colleen’s contribution to Indoor Bowls in South Otago has been massive and her passion and enthusiasm is unwavering - be it umpiring, catering, operating the bar or running the Associations finances as Treasurer, she's always in there doing her part to keep South Otago Indoor Bowls operating smoothly and efficiently. It's fantastic to see Colleen recognised for her outstanding contribution and service.

An event for us to recognise this acheivement will be held in the new year.

South Otago End of Year Prizegiving

A big thanks to those who turned up on Saturday 1st September to the South Otago end of season prize giving at the South Otago Town & Country club. It was a casual but pleasant evening, with around 50 members enjoying the conversations, supper and presentations.

South Otago Indoor Bowls President Gordon Duthie ran the evenings proceedings and presentations, abley assisted by Treasurer, Colleen Fenton.

Doug Grant was put on the spot several times during the presentations with requests for a joke or a yarn - he definitely didn't disappoint, coming out with a couple of absloute gems, having the audience in hysterics and adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the night.

The main award for the night, South Otago Player of the Year, was won by Eilleen Grant. Congratulates Eileen on another stellar year and we wish you well next weekend at the Henselite Singles final.

That's it for Indoor Bowls in South Otago for the 2018 season, we look forward to seeing you all again in 2019 👋

New Zealand Junior Singles Final

Lily Paterson represented us at the NZ Junior Singles final in North Wellington on Saturday 25th August. While she didn't qualify in the main draw, Lily had a good run and reached the Quarter finals of the plate event.

Later in the evening, playing lead for the South in the 4s, her team skipped by Singles winner Kaleb Johnston of Nelson, they won both their matches against the North. Like the recent Inter Island Test in Ashburton, the North and South were tied at the end of the 2 rounds play. Unfortuantely like the Inter Island test, the North also came away the winners on a countback of ends!

Sunday saw a better start to the day for Lily as she reached the Quarter finals of the main draw in the Secondary Schools Singles competition, representing South Otago High School.

A great result Lily, well done a fantastic weekends bowls.

North Island 24 , South Island 24

North Island win on a count back of ends, 250.5 – 235.5

So close, yet so far away. The South Island holding the handy advantage of a 6 game lead going into the last round, couldn't hold off the North Islands determined and dogged charge home.

There were some fantastic last round matches with some very tight finishes, but unfortunately the South were on the wrong side of the result in too many of these games.

Our four South Otago players - Eilleen Grant, Colleen Fenton, Alanna Moffitt and Robert Wilson played superbly throughout the day. Eileen and Colleen in the Womens Pair, had two very close games that could have gone either way, while Robert and Alannas respective Triples teams both won their Inter Island medals winning 2 of the 3 games from their sets.

This was the closest result in the test since 2003, the last time the South Island beat the North.

NORTH ISLAND vs SOUTH OTAGO

Balclutha, Saturday 4 August

Report by Delwyn Hughes

The North Island Indoor Bowls Team had a close encounter in their second match on their tour of the South Island against South Otago at the Balclutha War Memorial Hall, Balclutha on Saturday morning winning 27-21.

The North made the best start to lead 11-5 after the first round. A feature of the first round was the men’s triples match in which the North trailed 0-14 going into the last end against South Otago’s Graeme Hill, Barry Gray and Craig Botting. On this end Grant Rayner, Richard Caddy and Alex Reed had all the pressure on them to score a shot to avoid the humiliation of not scoring. Reed drew two shots to the head and Caddy covered the back but Hill with his last bowl got the shot which left Rayner having to draw the shot. This he did much to the jubilation of his team and the onlookers, South Otago winning that game 14-1.

The second round saw a much closer game but South Otago won again 7-5 and wrapped up the match13-6 in the final round. The second round saw South Otago come back strongly to win the women’s fours and the men’s singles pairs and triples and drawing the men’s fours to win that round 9-7 and to trail 14-18 overall. In the final round the games were close but the Northerners came through to reverse the result of the second round scoring 9-7 to run out the winners 27-21.

Top performances for South Otago were the women’s four of Alanna Moffitt (s), Jaime McElrea, Colleen Fenton, Hannah Botting (SO) who beat Dale Rayner (NW) (s), Sharon Peters (NH), Sue Bourne (TA), Jacque Porter (BP) 10-5, 6-5, 14-7.

The men’s singles was a cliffhanger with Steve Fisher (AK) winning the first game 11-10 after the scores were level 10-10 going into the last end. Fisher scored the vital shot to win 11-10 but then Alister Allison (SO) won the second 10-7. In the final deciding game Fisher came out on top 12-7.

The North’s women’s triple of Fiona Keegan (TG), Shelley Jacombs (HV), Denise Clarkson (HV) are in great form beating Eileen Grant (s), Barbara Read, Jane Wintringham (SO) 12-5, 16-1, but Grant showed all her class in the final round to win 9-8.Wintringham was replaced by Kathryn Edgar due to illness at the beginning of the second game.

Summerset New Zealand Indoor Bowls National Championships  News

Congratulations Robert Wilson! A fantastic run reaching the final at the Open Singles at the Summerset New Zealand Indoor Bowls National championships at Ashburton.

The final saw Robert playing fellow South Islander, Gary Low from Southland. In a hard fought battle, Robbo pulled a stunner out of the bag on the last end in regulation to force a deciding end. With Robert holding the win in the decider, Gary had to produce and inch perfect draw shot to the corner of the mat with the final bowl of the match to clinch the win - which he duly did.

South Otago v Southland

Saturday 26th May at Balclutha Memorial hall

Southland retained the Friendship Cup defeating the home team 126 - 98 in what was a very competitive fixture, up until the last rounds of Pairs.

South Otago held the lead for most of the day, taking the advantage with some solid Fours and Singles results. The first round Pairs however proved to be the undoing, as South Otago stumbled majorly winning only 2 games and drawing 1 out of the 16 matches played. This left a very difficult task of needing to win nearly all of the final round of Pairs matches to gain back the lead. Unfortunately Southland were too consistant and South Otago could only manage 14pts, with 6 wins and 2 draws.

The days top performer was Southland lead Warren Burgess with 6 wins from his 6 matches.

South Otago while beaten, had some encouraging results with Colleen Fenton, Dawn Reeves, Barry Gray, Greame Walker, Chris Moffitt and Doug Grant all recording 4 wins for the day.

South Otago v Eastern Southland

Saturday 26th May at the Clutha Valley Hall

Eastern Southland 31 pts, 248 game points

South Otago 17 pts, 191 game points

Zone 6 Womens 8's results

19th & 20th May, Timaru

South Otago stormed home to steal away the win from a confident South Canterbury team, defending their 2017 Womens 8's title.

Trading blows with the home side for most of the day, a very strong South Otago finish, combined with a little help from other teams taking a few games away from South Canterbury, our ladies crossed the line 4.5 points clear.

Christine King took away the Sandra Gould Memorial trophy for top scorer of the tournament with a very impressive 28 from the 30 available points, resulting in only one loss for her over the entire weekend. Not far behind her were our remaining 7 ladies, all within 9 points of Christine and outshining the 5 other regions in consistency.

A huge congratulations to the entire team and management on a fantastic result and superb weekends bowls.

South Otago Development Squad v Southland Development Squad

Sunday 20th May at Balclutha

The South Otago Development squad went down on a countback to the Southland Development squad in yesterdays annual Keach Family Trophy rep fixture.

Southland made a great start, pulling out to a commanding 55 - 31 lead at the lunch break. Whatever was snuck into the lunch meal by Janet Noah and her catering crew certainly did the trick as South Otago stormed back into contention to be a mere one point adrift going into the last round of Pairs.

The Pairs games swung to and fro with umpires David Gorton and Chris Moffitt kept extremely busy measuring pretty near every head of every game (or so it seemed to me anyway!). South Otago picked up 6.5 of the 12 available games in the final round to lock the scores up at 84 - 84. Unfortunately the fantastic fightback came up just short, a quick count back of game points saw Southland sneak home 677 - 637.

Well done to all the South Otago players for the brilliant fight back and coming so close to wrestling the trophy from Southlands grip.

Top scorers -

Russell Copland - 5 wins

Hannah Botting - 4 wins, 1 draw

Lily Paterson -  4 wins, 1 draw

Ryan McCaughan - 4 wins, 1 draw
