Post Pandemic Power Play Pairs results
Sunday 12 July
20 teams turned out for the first association run event of the season.
With the focus mainly on social bowls for 2020, players enjoyed the chance to get back into some structured play and meeting up once again and with fellow bowlers. There was a good mix of experienced, Island rep, junior and club players playing along side and with each other. Several teams from Otago travelled down to Balclutha to join in as well.
A massive thanks to Denise Lockhart for sponsoring the days event and also helping out with running the score bench.
Winners - Daniel French & Rochelle Hastie
2nd - Brandon & John Williams
3rd - Biddy Craig & Phyllis Peek
The South Otago Emergency Committee held a meeting on Monday 29 June to arrange a shortened programme for July and August.
Thank you to the 85 players that responded to the recent survey. Results from this were a clear indication that players mainly wanted social bowls for the remainder of the year. As a result, there will be no South Otago Championship events played in the 2020 season and we have thrown a couple of new events in.
While the Mixed Pairs will be held, due to the New Zealand competition being played, this will not be a South Otago Championship or title event.
An entry fee of $5 per player will be charged at all events and hand sanitiser will be available around the hall. Entries to all events are to be sent to Shona Preddy.
If you wish to play in an event but don't have a team or are short of a player please also let Shona know. She will do her best to find someone.
NZIB 2020 Events
The 1-5 Year Pairs Zone Play-off will be held in Dunedin on Sunday 19th July commencing at 1.00pm at the Otago Indoor Bowls Stadium. Entries close with Shona on Sunday 12th July.
This event is open to all players with between 1 and 5 year’s bowling experience. You are required to organise your own team and transport to Dunedin.
The NZ Mixed Pairs and the NZ Henselite Singles Zone Finals will be held on Sunday 23rd August at the Alexandra District Club.
COVID-19 Update
Looks like there's still an opportunity for some form of play and national competition this year for those itching to get back onto the mats!
Information from the South Otago Executive has been sent to club Secretary's today, including a link to a survey that we would like EVERY South Otago player to complete please. Responses from this will help us to make informed decisions around what shape our 2020 season takes.
Clubs are able to make their own decisons around restarting but do feel free to contact the Exexcutive if you have any questions or queries around this.
NOTICE TO ALL SOUTH OTAGO CLUBS RE COVID-19 SITUATION
As indicated in our previous notice to you regarding the COVID-19 situation, the South Otago Emergency Committee have discussed further the opening of the indoor bowls season.
Under Alert Level 2 the Committee decided it was impossible to open and therefore have extended the suspension of all South Otago events up to and including 30th June 2020. This decision has been based on directives from NZ Government and the Ministry of Health.
The Emergency Committee will review the situation prior to the end of June, and again any decisions made will be based upon the recommendations of the authorities at the time. The Committee will also take into account the opinions of our members so feedback from Clubs will be obtained.
Although South Otago will not be holding any events during June, clubs may wish to consider the option of opening up. HOWEVER they must be aware of all the guidelines as set out by NZIB and adhere to these at all times. To this end we attach the copy of these guidelines under the Executive Minutes and Newsletters tab for you and your members to take under consideration.
In the meanwhile we hope you and your club members are well, and all are finding alternative ways to keep themselves occupied on the winter nights.

South Otago Restricted Triples
Saturday 24th August
This was the last official tournament of the South Otago Association program for 2019.
Ten teams turned out, with a good spread of juniors, club and representative players among them all. Today was a great opportunity for those who don't normally Skip or play above Lead, to have a crack at these positions over the course of the day.
A team could only contain one 2019 Representative player and if this person had played Skip or Third at rep level, they were 'Restricted' to playing Lead or Two in any match today. Results were decided on points over the four games, with a nominated Power Play end thrown in for good measure during each.
Winners - Nola Anderson (skip), Reilly Paterson (Two), Chris Moffitt (Lead) - 4 wins (99 points)
Runners up - Robin Benington (Skip), David Roxburgh (Two), Deanna Benington (Lead) - 3 wins (80 points)
A big thanks to everyone who played today. You all got on board with the spirit and concept of day, helping each other out (and the opposition!) with shot selection, advice and even the occasion do-over! 😉 👍

Triangular Representative match results
Southland retained the SOCOS trophy, heading of Central and South Otago comfortably today in Balclutha. The Southerners lead all the way, leaving South and Central Otago in their wake, to duke it out for the minor places. Central Otago held onto second spot throughout the Four's and Singles rounds, but a big push from South Otago in the final couple of Pairs rounds saw them sneak ahead.
A big thanks to Janet Noah and her kitchen team of Jennifer MacKenzie, Beryl Duthie and Liz Gray for their fantastic catering effort, providing the morning tea mousetraps, a cooked lunch and afternoon tea. Thanks also to Paul McNabb for Umpiring all day, Alanna Moffitt for Controlling and Denise Lockhart on the raffle table 👍

St Mary's 4's Tournament
St Mary's Indoor Bowling club held their 20th Annual tournament on Sunday 16th June in Milton. We welcomed 16 teams and from the laughter and chatter coming from in the Hall, they were all having a great time.
At the end of section play there were 4 qualifiers - David & Wendy Roxburgh with Robin and Deanna Bennington; Alaister Allison, Helen Lyon with Russell & Lynn Copeland; Kevin & Wendy Proudfoot with Paul Desborough and Ian Hand; Greame & Maree Hill with Tom Dallas and Bruce Wilson.
Post section was pretty cutthroat with only 3 ends being played per match. The final saw Greame Hill and team defeat Kevin Proudfoot and team.
Our members this year donated over 100 raffle prizes for the multi draw raffle which is always very well supported and the highlight of the tournament.
St Mary's would like to thank all the indoor bowlers from Otago and South Otago that enetered, for their support. We hope to see you again in 2020.
Mollie Tiffany - Secretary, St Marys Indoor Bowling Club
Revolving Triples tournament
On Sunday 23rd June South Otago are trying out a new tournament concept, hoping that it will be more appealing to a wider range of players. We're calling it 'Revolving Triples'.
This concept is where team members will rotate up (or down) positions after each end played. The other notable difference is that any given team may only have a maximum of 2 South Otago representative players who have played in 2018 Paterson or 2019 Otago, Southland or Womens 8's rep matches.
We're keen to try something different and are looking for as many South Otago players as possible to get involved with this. You can enter your teams through Chris Moffitt or Shona Preddy. If you're looking for a team to play in, we can probably help with that too. Flick Chris Moffitt a message and he'll see what he can do 👍
Clutha Licencing Trust Sports Awards

South Otago v Otago
Sunday 28 April
In the first representative game of the season, Otago have retained the Sportsmanship Cup defeating South Otago 139 - 85 in Balclutha
Southern Region Umpires Tournament
A successful day was had at the Southern Region Umpires tournament on Sunday 7 April in Balclutha.
42 Umpires, Measurers and extras from Otago, Southland and South Otago came together for this annual 'social' fixture. While there is no formal winner or trophy and this event is really for Umpires from the three regions to get to know each other, competition is still pretty fierce ... though friendly!
Players were mixed into triples teams each round according to position they play in and individual player points are awarded for each of the four games. The days individual winners were -
Skips: Mike Cox - Otago
2nds: David Grant - South Otago
Leads: Irenie Edgeler - Otago
Big thanks to Otago and Southland for making the trip to us and to the kitchen staff, Janet Noah, Shona Preddy and Nola Anderson for afternoon tea. Thanks also to Alanna Moffitt who answered the SOS at 9.45am with wee Briar in tow, coming in to run the event!
North vs South Test Match
The North v South test was a tale of two halves, with the North Island storming home to take an extremely unlikely win 25-23 after being 21-11 down going into the final round.
Robert and Colleens teams played exceptionally well, with the Men's Triple being desperately close to winning their final match. This would have been enough for the South to win the test and for Robert and team to win their Inter Island medals.
The Womens Four, with Colleen leading, won their first two matches but like nearly all the other Southern teams, couldn't get across the line in the last. While it was gut wrenching not to win that and the test, the Womens Four deservedly won their Inter Island medal.
South Island team representatives
Congratulations to the South Otago players selected in the South Island team to tour the North Island from August 2nd - August 10th.
Robert Wilson will skip the Mens Triples and Colleen Fenton lead the Womens Four.
Well done and best of luck 👍
