North Island vs South Island Test

While the South Island team couldn't get up to beat the North Island in this annual fixture for the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy, our South Otago players represented their teams and the South Island exceptionally well with some solid performances.

Alanna Preddy, as part of the Womens Four was the most successful of the three, deservedly winning her first Inter-Island medal as her and team mates Suzanne Mackie, Marie-Therese Hooper and Deanne Osborne put away the North Island combination in all three games. The Southern Four complemented each others game extremely well, taking every opportunity on offer and giving the Northerners no real chance in any of the three matches to get back into contention.

Robert Wilson playing in the middle of the Mens Triple, had three tough battles in their set, losing the first two games narrowly but getting up to win the final match thanks in part to a perfectly weighted final bowl from skip Gary Low. The first two games could have gone either way but the North as they seem to have knack at doing, knew when to apply pressure and convert those close games into wins.

Kathryn Edgar, in the middle of the Womens Triple pushed their rivals hard all day but along with Ann Cottrell and Elaine Carnie, were unable to overcome the exceptionally strong North Island Triple consisting of Lisa Gould and two current New Zealand representative players - Lois Randell and Linda McCurdy. The first two games were very even contests most of the way through, but the experience of the New Zealand players showed through towards the latter stages of these games, capitalising on any Southern mistake and converting this into points.

New Zealand National Championships Fours

South Otagos Stephen Preddy and Kathryn Edgar joined forces with Ashburtons Michael Lawson and Matt Markham to finish runner up in the Open Fours event in Tauranga.

After a slow start to the final and finding themselves 7-0 down after 4 ends against the Nelson combination of Lloyd Bellis, Kath Arvidson, Rhonda Bellis and Debbie Warren, the Ashburton team clawed their way back into the match to be only 2 down going into the last end.

Unfortunately skip Michael Lawson couldn't pick up the 2 needed with his last bowl to force a deciding end and the Nelson team finished up 11-7 winners.

The appearance in a National final was the first for both Stephen and Kathryn, playing lead and second respectively. Both performed admirably in what was in the end, a very even contest.

2016 South Island team

Three South Otago players have been selected in the 2016 South Island team to take on the North Island in the annual clash for the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy. This years test match will take place in Christchurch on Saturday 13th August.

Robert Wilson retains his place in the Mens Triple but moves down one position to allow current New Zealand representative Gary Low of Southland to come in as skip.

Kathryn Edgar retains her position in the middle of the Womens Triple, though she has two different team mates this year, with Ann Cottrell of Otago skipping and Elaine Carnie from Southland leading.

Recalled to the team after two years on the outer is Alanna Preddy, who comes as lead of the well performed Womens Four, this year being skipped by Suzanne Mackie of Southland.

One could argue that on paper, this South Island team looks to be possibly the best chance the South has in the past 13 years to defeat their Northern rivals and lift the coverted trophy.
