NORTHLAND CLIMBING CLUB

The Northland Climbing Club operates the climbing wall at McKay Stadium. They have a group of dedicated climbers who are keen to provide climbing opportunities for Northlanders.  Along with managing the wall at McKay Stadium, they organise trips to climbing areas and provide opportunities to learn the skills you need to do everything safely.

FAQS

I have never climbed before but want to give it a try before I commit to a membership, can I do that?

Yes, we will be holding open nights about once a month for non-members to come and give it a try. This is an opportunity to see if you enjoy climbing and want to become a member and return on a more regular basis on members-only nights.

Do I have to be a member to use the wall?

Yes - at this stage if you want to be a regular user you will need to become a member. This helps us regulate the use of the wall, and ensures the club has the financial support it needs to continue to operate the wall and cover associated costs. We hire the wall from Sport Northland and this is a cost that we need to cover.

When does the membership expire?

Memberships run until 30 June, which is the end of our club year. Memberships will need to be manually renewed for the following year.

I don't have all the climbing gear, can I still climb?

Yes, we have ropes set up at the climbing wall and many sizes of harnesses and shoes available to hire for a minimal cost. Harnesses are essential, and while climbing shoes are specially designed to assist your climbing, they are not essential. Closed-toe footwear must be worn (no bare feet or handles on the wall).

What skills will I need to climb regularly? Do I learn how to belay?

You need the ability to hold on! And you will need to be trained on how to belay, and signed off as competent, as this is the best way to share the responsibility of the climbing wall. You need to be at least 14 years old to belay (on occasion we will make exceptions if we can do so safely). Our most competent supervisors and volunteers will train those who need the belay training.

Do you take groups (schools, team building etc)?

At this stage, we aren't quite ready to cater specifically to groups having exclusive access, but this is definitely something we are working on for the future.

Is indoor rock climbing safe?

Indoor climbing is very safe, as long as the correct procedures are followed. The most common injuries are grazes or sore fingertips.

What safety precautions are taken?

The club takes safety very seriously. We have developed a series of safe operating and training procedures which are to industry standard and approved by qualified professionals to ensure that our supervisors, trainers, belayers, and climbers know what they are doing, and can conduct their activities competently. We all come from a variety of backgrounds but many are highly experienced in both indoor and outdoor climbing.
