Most of the secondary schools in Wanganui operate a 'badminton club' as part of their extra-curricular activities.

After school competition is held during Terms 2 and 3 based at Wanganui High School. The competition is organised through Sport Whanganui and the teachers.

A New Zealand Secondary Schools Teams Competition is held annually during the Winter Tournaments Week (early September). This is a single gender teams competition with both genders running side-by-side at the same venue. Each team consists of a minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 6. 

A New Zealand Secondary Schools Junior Championships for Year 9 and 10 pupils is held in late November each year.
