Yellow Squad (Fundamentals)

Swimmers normally progress into this squad from Mini Hawks, though swimmers of suitable ability can move directly into this squad after an assessment by an Aquahawks coach. Yellow squad is focused on improving skills and technique across all strokes while building confidence and having fun in the water. There will also be an emphasis placed on developing each swimmers’ kick. Over time in this squad swimmers will be taught: 

  • Advanced Stroke Technique & Kick 

  • Advanced Racing Tumble Turn & Open Turn Skills 

  • Pace Clock Skills and how to correctly time themselves 

  • Individual Medley Skills 

Entry Criteria 

  • Must be competent (as assessed by Aquahawks coaches) at all four strokes and all racing turns. To accomplish this, a swimmer should be able to swim 100m continuously in legal freestyle, backstroke, & breaststroke with all turns, and 2x25m of legal butterfly. 

  • Must be able to execute a racing dive from the starting blocks. 

  • Must be able to complete 4x50m @ 2:00 while holding under 1:30. 

Equipment 

Long fins, kickboard, drink bottle  

Competitions 

Swimmers can attend Club Nights and take part in the Annual Club Championships. They are also encouraged to take part in other local or regional events, including HBPB Summer/Winter Championships and the Napier Port Ocean Swim.
