ABOUT CLYDE PONY CLUB TEAMS

During the year there are opportunities for Clyde Pony Club riders to put themselves forward for teams competing in mounted games, show jumping, eventing and dressage.

Respresenting Clyde in a team is huge fun and one of the memories riders and families often treasure from their time at Pony Club. Some of the events Clyde Pony Club teams compete at, such as Springston Trophy in eventing and the Otago Mounted Rifles mounted games competition, have been a highlight of the year for several generations of Pony Club riders.

We are also lucky to have the resources to help our riders train for competiions and events.

  • The Dunstan Equestrian Centre (DEC) arena is available to book via their Sporty page to train for dressage and show jumping.

  • The Clyde PC Cross Country jump course on Letts Gully Rd is available at no cost for Clyde PC members. Bookings are essential (see Bookings tab) and all current member families are emailed a code for booking each year.

  • Mounted Games are taken pretty seriously at Clyde Pony Club with a huge amount of fun and success over the years. Extra training sessions are often available during the summer and are advertised on our Clyde PC facebook page.

FURTHER INFORMATION on branch team events can be found under each discipline tab. Please also read the information on the team selection process.

ENTRIES - For events that you are required to enter as an individual, the entry form will be advertised on the Clyde Members FB page as well as other sites

AREA TEAMS - Once riders are competing at more advanced levels in their discipline, they are able to put themselves forward for selection to Otago Southland Pony Club area teams, competing for national honours. Area teams in dressage, show jumping and mounted games compete at NZPCA Championship week, held in January each year. Area eventing teams compete at the NZPCA Eventing Championships held in the May school holidays each year.

CENTRAL OTAGO PONY CLUB INTER BRANCH EVENT

Another treasured annual team event on our calendar is Central Otago Pony Club (COPC) Interbranch event. All Clyde riders are invited to enter this.

At our Interbranch event, riders from all five Central Otago branches come together for a day of friendly competition, representing their branch and competing in classing, dressage, show jumping and teams mounted games.

2025 Interbranch will be held in Cromwell on Sunday 7 December.

CLYDE TEAM SELECTION PROCESS

ELIGABILITY - To be eligable for all Pony Club team events, riders must be current NZPCA members and have met the requirements of the NZPCA Rally Attendance Rule - (see below)

EXPRESSION of INTEREST - For many team events, Clyde riders are asked to complete an expression of interest form, which can be found under each discipline tab. Our panel of selectors then select teams, and riders will be notified of the outcome by email.

TEAM SELECTION is based not only on performance but also on riders being active, contributing pony club members and their committment to required training sessions and rallies prior to an event.

See Clyde Team Selection Criteria link at the bottom of the page

For jumping disciplines, riders must be competing competently at the height they are nominating for.

COMPOSITE TEAMS and DRAFT RIDERS - If we do not have enough riders to form a Clyde team, there may be an opportunity to ride in a composite team, combined with another branch OR to be a 'draft' rider, available to be picked up by other teams. This is a great opportunity to get to know other riders outside our branch.

To be put forward as a draft rider for jumping disciplines requires two 'live' scores at your nominating height.

AGE RESTRICTIONS - Where there is an age restriciton for Pony Club team categories, this is the riders age as at the 1 August prior to the event.

Riders are able to ride up a height / age if already competing at that higher height.

THE RALLY RULE - (NZPCA reg. 15.4 - Rally attendance for exams and competitions)

In the 12 months before the competition or exam:

Riders with no certificate or who hold D, D+ or C cert - must attend a minimum of 5 rallies; 3 rallies on the mount they are competing on

Riders who hold Full C+ cert - must attend a minimum of 4 rallies; 2 rallies on the mount they are competing on

Riders who hold Full B cert - must attend a minimum of 3 rallies; 1 on the mount they are competing
