Glenmark CluGlenmark Club Day 9 June 2018

On a balmy morning at the Omihi Domain the girls of the Glenmark Netball Club made their way past

the almost completed Omihi Hall to the netball courts. The smell of coffee and hot food filled the air.

The Primary B team lined up against Cheviot who had a significant height advantage at both ends of

the court. Both teams competed hard for the ball through the mid court with Centres Maggie

Kirkland (Cheviot) and Maggie Croft (Glenmark) working hard and making good use of bounce passes

to combat the height difference. Cheviot took a 4 - 2 lead into the second quarter, Cheviot’s

defensive end proved strong with Ashley May Coe (Cheviot) GK a strong defender, meaning the

Glenmark girls were unable to convert their opportunities to score but Mia Northover at GS found

some form from long range and kept them in touch 7-6 at half time to Cheviot.

Mia substituted off in the second half which saw a reshuffle of players by coach Katie Croft, with

Violet Inkson coming on as WD against the Cheviot WA Meg Davis. Maggie Croft and Martha Sidey

combined well in the shooting circle and were well fed by Maggie Hamilton at WA and Alice Barnes

at C. Glenmark trailed 10-9 at the end of the 3rd quarter, with Jordyn Trethowen securing a vital

intercept to allow the shooters to level the scores early in the final quarter as the volume from the

side-line parents went up a notch.

GK Summer Sutherland (Glenmark) worked hard to keep her much taller opponent at bay as she and

Jordyn kept the defensive pressure on, however Cheviot triumphed 12-11.

A great game from both teams.

Waiau Senior B gave a good home crowd something to cheer on a sunny but blustery club day in

Waiau. The team consolidated their strong position in the Senior C grade with a confident win over a

less experienced but rapidly improving Hawarden B team.

Jasmine McKay was a standout at Wing Attack, driving strongly into the goal third and accurately

feeding the shooters. Maddie Scarlet (GS) and Celine Barnes (GA) used this to good effect by

combining seamlessly in the circle and shooting accurately. Waiau’s 40-13 win keeps them unbeaten

in Round 2, setting up an exciting game next week against close rivals Cheviot C.

All was not so rosy elsewhere for Waiau teams. Waiau A struggled against Hawarden A and lost 8-33.

With some key players missing it was an opportunity to try some new combinations, and Emma

Gardner showed great progress in defence.

Meanwhile in the Primary A grade Waiau PA lost to Hawarden PA 14-35, reversing the result from

earlier in the round. Strong performances from Sophie McDonald at GD and Kate Galbraith at GA

weren’t enough against a well-organised Hawarden team, and both sides will be looking for a win

next week to secure places in the final.

Waiau PB continue their steep learning curve in the Primary B grade. They were no match for

Glenmark A but continue to improve every week, with a Player of the Day performance from Brooke

Duncan.

In the Senior A grade Cheviot A had a much tighter time against Hanmer A than in their last game but

came out ahead 35-30 to maintain their top position. Culverden A strengthened their quest for a

finals spot with a 49-25 win over club mates Culverden Red.
