SENIOR WOMEN

The Journey of Senior Womens Rugby in KC...

In 2022, King Country Rugby Union (KCRU) took the step into women's rugby, which culminated in establishing the first King Country women's representative team - the Trailblazers.

Part of this ground-breaking growth in our community game in 2022 included the introduction of two women's clubs teams; Tongariro United, which played in the Bay of Plenty (BOP) women's competition, and Waitete, which entered in a development grade run by Waikato Rugby Union (WRU).

The great news is both teams are back for more in 2023! Tongariro United only just missed out on the BOP semi-finals in its first year, so the girls will have plenty of motivation to play finals footy this year.

Waitete welcomes experienced women's coach and current Trailblazers coach Wayne Fraser into the fold in 2023, as they venture into the WRU's women's championship (second-tier) competition to continue their growth from last year.

KCRU also has high hopes to help establish a team in Taumarunui as soon as possible. A Taumarunui team did sprout at the back end of last season to enter in the KCRU Sevens tournament, but it didn't play in any formal competition. Fingers crossed we can get this team on the grass very shortly.

Below are the draws, results and standings for Tongariro United and Waitete's respective competitions, so you can keep up with how the girls are getting on through 2023!
