Kapa Haka | Māori Performing arts

The College has a strong commitment to Kapa haka (Māori performing arts) as it is reflected in our group name Kura-ki-Uta (KKU) taken from our Wharenui.

Our kapa haka is open to all tauira from Year 9 to Year 13 and to all levels of expertise. Our kaupapa reflects our College values with a strong focus on whanaungatanga and manaakitanga.

As well as supporting school, community and iwi activities we regularly compete in the Mātaatua Regional Secondary School and National Secondary School competitions. KKU has won back to back titles from 2007 - 2013 at the Mātaatua Regionals and in the inaugural National Secondary School Competition in 2000 were placed third winning the Poi which has since been gifted to us.

The time invested in Kapa Haka is recognised by offering Unit/Achievement standards if Performing Arts and students gain these to help support their NCEA qualifications.
