SAM TANNER TROPHY
Sam Tanner is a Papamoa Local who grew up spending Wednesday nights with Papamoa Athletics Club at Gordon Spratt Reserve.
Sam is now a specialist 1500m runner and in 2021 he competed in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics and won the Sport BOP Young Sportsman of the Year. In 2022 he successfully defended his 1500m title at the National Athletics Championships and then went on to smash his personal best to run 3:31.34 for sixth in the men’s 1500m final of the Commonwealth Games. He is number two on the all-time NZ list for the 1500m distance.
In the 2021/22 season, Papamoa Athletics decided to honour Sam by creating the new Sam Tanner Trophy. The fastest 1500m runner, at a club night, will be crowned the champion.
Athletes will have 2 attempts each season to run the 1500m at a club night. The fastest time recorded in either of these races will be awarded the Sam Tanner Trophy.
The winners each season are as follows:
2021/2022 - Evie Metcalfe
2022/2023 - Toby Borman
2023/2024 - Max McNeill
