Well, we had the race despite 100mm rain overnight and about 300mm snow during the event . What an awesome race director. He trusted the competitors to look after themselves and delivered a true adventure race. We climbed a 1600m peak and didn't encounter snow until half way up. By the time we got down there was a foot of snow even on the flats. Despite this, those that could handle the conditions kept going, and those that felt they should withdraw did. Cheers Milan -my nominee for race director of the year. Splasher, Absolutely bloody well done & I’ll be back next year. It will be very popular.
- The ADVENTURE was certainly provided
- Even in fair weather the course would have provided a challenge to suit all participants with easier and harder CPs
- The briefing and race set up encouraged self-responsibility
- There was a sensible gear check of everyone’s compulsory equipment
- CP’s were in sensible locations, not hidden away but still required reasonable navigation to find
- The food and facilities were great
- Heaps of & a good variety of spot prizes
The only glitch was lack of cut off times on each segment. There was a compulsory CP on kayak, trek & MTB stages so given the weather some teams shortened their trek to ensure they’d reach the compulsory MTB CP. They didn’t withdraw however when the MTB stage was closed their day was done. Other teams decided to stay out & play longer on the trek collecting more points. They were capable of handling the conditions (as were the others) however looking back at it now staying out collecting CPs perhaps wasn’t considerate to the organisers as they had to guess if those teams were just out longer having decided themselves not to MTB, or if they were beginning to have difficulties. In normal conditions trekking too long would have been a DNF because of missed compulsory, or a finish with nil points because way over time limit. Stage cut offs would have solved that. I’m sure the organisers will have learnt for next year as it would have avoided some uncertainty about team location late in the day & uncertainty around final result placings.
But that glitch was minor compared to the bloody fantastic day all participants enjoyed. Well done.
p.s. the snow covered scenery on Sunday morning was stunning . Colin Thanks Colin . Yes, you have good points. We have learned from it and will make improvements this year. Thanks.
Hi there Milan and the crew,
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the weekend! I have never been in such extreme conditions as up the top of that hill, but I loved every minute of it, learnt a lot about myself and will never forget the experience. My teammate and I have been a bit sick this week but buzzing whenever we think of the experience! I hope you didn't get too cold out looking on the Sat night and I wish to apologise for being late in and possibly causing some concern.
We had a blast and I look forward to the next one, a real adventure!

... it was a great experience and sure was beautiful the next day - wish we had had more time on Sunday to hike up to Mystery Lake and loop back via the Potts river.
Definitely plan to return next year. (I wonder if there will be a control point on Mt Sunday?) Pete Hi Milan, Just wanted to say thanks for putting on the race. It was nice to go to an event where it was up to you to look after yourself and make your own decisions. It was challenging conditions but memorable. I really enjoyed the last kayak in the snow. I was very pleased to hear you will be back next year for another race. See you then. Thanks again to you and all your helpers. Kind regards, Steve Strange. Team: Pete Stop Following. Great event. Especially liked the fact you didn't see an official or hazard tape around every corner. Roll on next year. Part Timer
