WELCOME TO THE HOME OF BASKETBALL IN SELWYN

Selwyn Hawks Basketball Opportunities Overview

Hoops After School Programme

This is for primary school children, in Years 1 to 8.  Using a range of fun and engaging small-sided games this programme is ideal as either an introduction to basketball or for young players to begin to develop their skills.  Hoops runs throughout the year, providing an 8 week course each school term.  We run sessions across Selwyn, with sessions in Darfield on Tuesdays; Lincoln on Wednesdays; West Melton on Thursdays and at the Selwyn Sports Centre in  Rolleston on Fridays. All the sessions are planned and directed by our development officer and community coach and feature some of the Hawks young members also developing their coaching skills by assisting with the delivery of the Hoops programme.

Summer Skills

Our Summer Skills sessions are aimed at some of our older players who are looking for an opportunity to develop their skills further.  These sessions cater to those players in the under 13 through to the under 20 age groups.  While normally aimed at those already involved within some of our CBA club basketball teams, Summer Skills is also a great place for less experienced players to develop their skill sets with an eye to playing in one of our club competition teams.  Summer skills runs during Terms 1 & 4 only offering a 5-7 week course.  Summer Skills runs on Wednesdays in  Rolleston, although if there is sufficient demand in other centres we may have the ability to run additional classes.

Holiday Programmes

Throughout the school holidays we offer a range of skills programmes for children of all ages.  These sessions are usually longer in duration, usually a 1-2 half-day programme, where participants get the opportunity to develop their skills.  Our offering for Holiday Programmes usually includes ‘Girls Got Game’ sessions which are dedicated to generating interest in basketball among Selwyn Girls.  For more information and to see what Holiday programmes may be coming up.

Hawks Miniball Competition

Our Hawks Miniball Competition is the place for some of our youngest members to get their first taste of game play.  Miniball targets children in Years 3 & 4 and plays a 3v3 competition format.  Teams enter via their schools and play on Mondays at Selwyn Sports Centre.  This competition runs throughout Terms 1 & 4 and gives a 6 week competition each term.  This is not just where young players get their first taste of competition game play but many of our young referees start their refereeing journey here. While being a competition, the focus is very much on development, with each week having a specific focus that both players and referees can concentrate their learning around.

Referee Development

It’s not just players that thrive at the Selwyn Hawks, we have an extensive development programme where our Junior refs can referee miniball or primary comp games and develop their skills.  We see a large number of our young referees taking the step from this introduction to also referee in the CBA club competition.  We also run workshops  throughout the year and there is online training available.  Those that look to referee in the CBA club Competition are also well supported and mentored from within the club.  We have a dedicated referee development officer to oversee this.
