PRIMARY COMPETITION 2026: Year 5/6

3x3 Format

Year 5/6: 3x3

We are excited to bring back the Year 5/6 competition in keeping with advice from Canterbury Basketball Association and Basketball New Zealand.

3x3 is becoming a commonly accepted better pathway for youth basketball players to learn the game of basketball, to gain a greater enjoyment of the game and to receive more development opportunities. We believe this is going to hugely beneficial for the children involved.

Entries are open to Primary School teams, however we would also like to be able to place individual players into teams if a school is unable to enter a team.  If you have a player or players who wish to play but do not have a team please contact us directly on admin@selwynhawks.co.nz and we will do our best to help out to put them in one.

Please submit your entries on or before the 1st of May 2026 so pooling and draws can be determined accordingly.

  • Start Date: Monday, 18th May 2026
  • End Date: Monday, 24th August 2026
  • Time: Mondays 3:30pm - 6:00pm (or beyond if required)
  • Location: Selwyn Sports Centre, Broadlands Drive, Rolleston
  • Cost:  $240 per team (including GST)

Competition Format:

  • A twelve week competition running over Terms 2 & 3.
  • Teams will play 2 games per afternoon, with a rest game in between.
  • 4 Players per team, 3 on the court and 1 substitution (we recommend a substitution every dead ball)
  • 12 Minute running clock game
  • Shortened court - Ideally looking to play on a shortened court with 2 baskets to simulate transition aspects of 5 v 5, although due to resourcing and needing portable hoops to create the short courts we may have to play 3 x 3 rules on a half-court looking to score in the same basket for this season alone.
  • All games will have a referee provided.  Refs are a vital part of our game and we will be working with junior refs and training them during these games. A senior referee will oversee games. We appreciate your understanding that no referee will get it right all the time and that all our referees will be working hard to improve their skills every week.

Benefits:

There are many benefits to adopting the 3 v 3 format Check out the video on this page which outlines all the reasoning behind moving to this format.

If you have any questions about the changed format, please contact me at admin@selwynhawks.co.nz.

Rules of Note:

  • ALL PLAYERS MUST WEAR MOUTHGUARDS

  • Clearing – After a shot attempt or made basket the ball must be cleared behind the three-point line before you can score.

  • Dead ball – After every dead ball, the ball is checked at the top of the Arc.

  • No coaching during the game

  • Scoring – Inside the Arc is worth 1 point, outside the Arc is worth 2 points.

  • Foul shots – If you are fouled in the act of shooting you get a single free throw worth 1 point (2 if you shoot from behind the Arc).

  • Each team is to wear a consistent uniform, preferably numbered (we can supply some bibs)

  • All other traditional rules of basketball remain the same

The video on this page from BBNZ has a nice quick explanation of the rules.

We follow all the basic rules of basketball, however this is about the players learning and development, so some allowances may be made, dependant on player and team ability.
