MINIBALL 2022

YEAR 3 & 4 SCHOOLS COMPETITION

After a successful change to our Miniball competition last year, we are excited to continue with the 3v3 Miniball competition in keeping with advice from Canterbury Basketball Association and Basketball New Zealand. 3v3 is becoming a commonly accepted better pathway for youth basketball players to learn the game of basketball, to gain a greater enjoyment of the game and to receive more development opportunities. We believe this is going to be hugely beneficial for the children involved.

Entries are open to Miniball teams, however we would also like to be able to place individual players into teams if a school is unable to enter a team.  If you have a player or players who wish to play but do not have a team please contact me directly on development@selwynhawks.co.nz.

Miniball is a great stepping stone competition for these kids to move on to Primary Comp.

Competition Dates: 7 March to 11 April 2022

Time: Mondays 3:30pm - 5:30pm

Location: Selwyn Sports Centre, Broadlands Drive, Rolleston

Cost:  $120 per team (including GST)

Rules of Note

  • ALL PLAYERS MUST WEAR MOUTHGUARDS
  • A six week competition in Term 1.
  • Teams will play 2 games per afternoon.
  • 4 Players per team, 3 on the court and 1 substitution (we recommend a substitution every dead ball).
  • 13 Minute running clock game.
  • Shortened court - Ideally looking to play on a shortened court with 2 baskets to simulate transition aspects of 5 v 5, although due to resourcing and needing portable hoops to create the short courts we may have to play 3 x 3 rules on a half-court looking to score in the same basket for this season alone.
  • Games will be played with hoops lowered to 2.4m.
  • To encourage man-to-man defence, coloured wrist bands or coloured bibs will be worn.
  • All games will have a referee provided.  Refs are a vital part of our game and we will be working with junior refs and training them during these games. A senior referee will oversee games. We appreciate your understanding that no referee will get it right all the time and that all our referees will be working hard to improve their skills every week.
  • We follow all the basic rules of basketball, however this is about the players learning and development, so some allowances may be made, dependent on player and team ability.

We would also like to be able to place individual players into teams if a school is unable to enter a team.  If you have a player or players who wish to play but do not have a team please contact me directly.
