At Taradale Intermediate, hauora/wellbeing means to ‘flourish’ - feeling good and functioning well. Our learning environment is a safe and calm space where we can grow our mana through all aspects of the Mana Model.
The Sir John Kirwan Foundation has designed Mitey with NZ teachers and the University of Auckland to provide an evidence-based approach to teaching mental health education to primary and intermediate aged children.
It is built around the NZ curriculum and embedded into everyday learning, to ensure children are equipped with the age-appropriate skills and knowledge they need to recognise and respond to mental health issues in both themselves and others before they enter teenage years.
Mitey has successfully implemented its approach to schools throughout New Zealand. At Taradale Intermediate we are working towards integrating mental health education into our daily timetable.

Pause Breathe Smile aims to create a healthier New Zealand by training educators to teach New Zealand's locally developed, evidence based and scientifically informed mindfulness in schools programme.
The intention of Pause Breathe Smile is to support the Mental Health Foundation's vision of 'creating a society' where all people flourish'; the mission of the Pause Breathe Smile Trust; 'Half a Million Healthy Minds'; and the vision of the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) to develop 'young people who will be confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners."
Pause Breathe Smile teaches mindfulness as a life-skill for the purposes of:
improving focus and attention
increasing care for self and others
developing emotion regulation skills and the ability to self-calm
improving the ability to make wise choices about what supports wellbeing and what doesn't
developing emotional literacy and boosting resilience
cultivating a positve sense of connection to self, others and the natural world.
These outcomes are achieved through the eight Pause Breathe Smile lessons, supporting the key competencies of the NZC and the four areas of hauora conceptualised by Te Whare Tapa Whā.
At Taradale Intermediate, we teach the eight lessons at the start of each year.
