FIONA DOOLEY (NEE NEWELL)


Fiona started swimming later than most and was 13 before taking swimming seriously and went on to become Southlands top female swimmer of the early to mid 1970's.
A Breaststroke specialist - she held Southland Open Records in all strokes but Freestyle.
Fiona represented Southland from Teleprinter, Otago/Southland, South Island Age Group Champs, NZ Winter Champs and NZ Open.
In 1974, Fiona was selected as a part of the NZ Team for The Australian Winter Games, 1975 as a member of the NZ Team for the first ever NZ Games in Christchurch - finishing 4th in the 200M Breaststroke and 5th in the 100M Breaststroke.
This year, Fiona was also our Club Captain from 1972 - 1977, coaching on club nights from the age of 14 then was Head Coach of the main pool for numerous years.
1975/1976, was a very successful season winning 2 Golds at NZ Winters.
Also raking in a Gold in 100M Breaststroke, Bronze in the 200M Breaststroke and 200 IM, and 5th in the 100M Backstroke.
Fiona retired from swimming in April 1976, and swam her last race breaking a Southland and NZ Open Record for the 100M Breaststroke.
1975 adn 1976, we saw Fiona named Southland Swimmer of the Year.
In 2009, was made a lifetime member of Waverley.


BECKIE DOOLEY


Beckie is daughter of Fiona and also was a Breaststroke specialist.
Beckie swam her first 11 Years for Waverley before moving to Christchurch to swim for Jasi Club.
Beckies most successful season was in 2006, winning 2 Golds and a Bronze at the NZ Age Group Champs and being selected for the NZ Trans Tasman Team.
Beckie won numerous medals at NZ Winter Champs and her first at NZ Open Champs in 2010 in the 200M Breaststroke.
