MR TED TREFFERS

Here is a passage written by one of Ted's swimmers...
"Of the coach who has guided me throughout my career, Mr Treffers, I am in a debt of gratitude that I could never repay. If it had not been for Mr Treffers, I would never have been a swimmer. In the early days, spending countless hours teaching me to dive.
There selflessly each and every morning and night to train his squad and not often would one of us miss a lesson. Because that would be letting him down. There was never a raised voice or a cross word but sometimes a 'look' was all that was needed when you slacked off."

Those of us who were lucky enough to be coached by this quiet and unassuming man, should feel extremely privileged. He was a founding member of Waverley along with his children - Lilianne, Bert and Mark and Head Coach of the club from 1964 - 1977. He encouraged club swimmers to give competitive swimming a go, even those not so talented - if they put the effort in then Ted would put the time in, with some amazing results.

Ted's wife, Lily Treffers, was also heavily involved with the club and both were made life members of Waverley in 1977. In 1978, Mr Treffers was made a life member of Swimming Southland.  The late 1960's to 1970's was a very successful time for the club and most of the credit for that can go to Mr Treffers for holding the squad together - taking training seriously but with a perfect balance of fun.

During his career as a coach, his swimmers won 425 Southland Titles, 45 first placings at Teleprinter, NZ Age Groups and Open Champs. The highlight for him must have been watching Mark win the 400M Medley at the Christchurch Commonwealth Games in 1974. Ted went as the Swimming Team Manager to the Munich Olympic Games in 1972 and brought back, for his squad members, badges and other souvenirs.

"The kids make it enjoyable and they make it all worth it." Ted Treffers
