STARTING

Starter to stand in a position where they can see the feet of ALL athletes.
Ensure that if you are using the ‘gun’, that you use ear muffs!
Use the following commands:
                “Take your marks”
                            “Set” or “get set”
                    “Bang or Clap”

Raise the gun into the air, above your head.

On take your marks, the athletes move up to, but not over,
the line and take up the starting position. They may take a
short while to settle, especially if they are using blocks.
They MUST NOW be in the correct start position! If they
are using a standing start, one leg in front of the other and
arms in the ‘ready’ position or ready in the crouch position.
On the second command, the standing athletes may only flex their knees and/or move their arms into run position and they must hold that position (freeze) until the bang/clap, which will be no sooner than 2 seconds after the ‘set’ command.
If any athlete moves after the ‘set’ command all athletes are asked to stand up and you begin again.
If there is a false start, that athlete is warned, but ANY athlete who breaks after that warning IS disqualified!
Spiked running shoes may be worn from Grade 10 and up and if they are, blocks are to be used.
All athletes aged 10 and up are expected to do a crouch start.

Time Keeping.

You must use your index finger to start the stop watch (not the thumb!) using the button on the right
Watch the starter, and start the watch on the smoke, NOT the "bang".
Stop the watch when any part of the athlete's torso (upper body) crosses the line, using the same right hand button.
If you are split timing, then as each athlete crosses the line use the left hand button, and just keep doing that as the athletes cross. Stop the watch after the last athlete has crossed.
To recall the times, just press the button at the top centre of the watch and that will recall all of the times.
