Umpires play a vital role in making netball possible. Whether you're a current player, former player, parent, or simply love the game, umpiring is a rewarding way to stay involved in our netball community.

As an umpire you'll:

  • Build confidence and leadership skills.
  • Improve your knowledge of the game.
  • Meet new people and make lifelong friendships.
  • Stay active and involved in netball.
  • Be supported through every stage of your development.

At Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre, we welcome umpires of all ages and experience levels. Whether you're picking up a whistle for the first time or returning to the game, we're here to help you succeed.

Getting Started 

Becoming an umpire is easy!

Step 1 – Complete the Netball NZ Learning to Umpire Module

Complete the free Learning to Umpire online course through Sport Tutor.

  1. Register or log in to Sport Tutor.
  2. Search for Learning to Umpire in the Netball NZ Catalogue.
  3. Enrol in the course.
  4. Complete the online learning and assessment.
  5. Email your completion certificate to umpire@hpnc.org.nz.

We also recommend completing the Understanding 6 v 6 Netball module if you are umpiring FutureFERNS.

Step 2 – Register with HPNC

Once you've completed the online module, register as an umpire with Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre so we can support your development and connect you with umpiring opportunities.

Step 3 – Start Umpiring

If you're already part of a club or school, they'll help allocate you to games.

If you're not currently affiliated with a club or school, don't worry—we'll help you get started. Simply contact umpire@hpnc.org.nz, and we'll connect you with an HPNC club.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get paid?

Payment varies between clubs and schools and generally reflects your experience and the level of the game you are umpiring. Please speak with your club or school regarding their payment arrangements.

Am I old enough to umpire?

  • Year 8: Eligible to umpire 6-aside FutureFERNS games.
  • Year 9 and above: Eligible to begin umpiring 7-aside netball.

There is no upper age limit for umpiring—many experienced umpires continue officiating well into their senior years.

Can I umpire if I use a wheelchair?

Absolutely. We encourage inclusive participation and welcome umpires of all abilities. If you use a wheelchair or require any support, please contact us so we can discuss how we can best assist you.
