Whether you're picking up a whistle for the first time or working towards national appointments,
HPNC is committed to supporting umpires at every stage of their development.

Our umpire pathway provides opportunities to learn, gain confidence, receive coaching, and progress
​​​​​​​through the Netball New Zealand umpire framework.

Step 1 – Beginner Umpire

Perfect for anyone wanting to give umpiring a go.

At this level you will:

  • Learn the basic rules of netball.
  • Umpire FutureFERNS and junior games.
  • Receive support and guidance from experienced umpires.
  • Build confidence in a fun and supportive environment.

Step 2 – Developing Umpire

As your confidence grows, you'll begin umpiring more competitive games and continue developing your skills.

You will:

  • Attend HPNC umpire workshops.
  • Receive coaching and feedback.
  • Learn positioning, game management and advantage.
  • Work towards your Centre Award.

Step 3 – Centre Award Umpire

Achieving your Centre Award recognises your ability to consistently umpire competitive netball to a high standard.

Centre Award umpires:

  • Umpire senior and representative matches.
  • Receive ongoing coaching and assessments.
  • May be selected for representative tournaments.
  • Can begin working towards Zone Award.

Step 4 – Zone & National Pathway

Umpires who continue to develop may progress through the Netball Northern Zone and Netball New Zealand pathways.

Opportunities include:

  • Zone Badge assessment.
  • National Badge pathway.
  • Representative tournament appointments.
  • Umpire coaching and mentoring.
  • National championship appointments.
