Papatoetoe Athletics Club

Long Jump

This is a guide for club officials as to the rules and procedures for long jump. These rules are in two sections:

(i) Normal take-off board      12yrs & over

(ii) Square metre board          7 – 11 yrs

Normal Take-off Board

Each competitor shall be allowed a maximum of three jumps.

It shall be counted as a no jump if any competitor:

Touches the ground beyond the take-off board, i.e. toes must be behind the front edge of the board.

Takes off from outside either side of the board.

In the course of landing, touches the ground outside the landing area.

After a completed jump walks back through the landing area.

Employs any form of somersaulting. Uses weights or grips of any kind.

No marks shall be placed on the runway but competitors may place markers alongside the runway.

Note: If a competitor takes off before reaching the board it IS a valid jump.

All legal jumps shall be measured from the front edge of the take-off board (even if the take-off point is behind the board) to the nearest break in the landing area made by any part of the body, i.e. if a competitor places their hand behind themselves on landing the measurement will be to the hand position not where the feet landed.

Officials should make sure the sand is levelled after each jump.

Square Metre Board

The metre board should be fixed in one position for all competitors in any one position.  A no jump is recorded only is a competitors foot is over the front edge of the square board.

But also note the other Normal take-off Board rules apply.

Jumps are measured from the front edge of the colour that the competitor takes off from.

TIES

This rule shall apply to both the normal and the coloured take-off boards.  If there is a tie for a placing, the second best jump of those competitors shall decide the placings.

If a tie still exists, then the third best jump shall decide the placings.  Only in the unlikely case of two athletes having 3 identical jumps would there be a tied placing in Long Jump.
