South Otago Senior/Junior Pairs

Sunday 14 August

The South Otago Senior/Junior Pairs were held at the South Otago Town & Country Club, after a false start earlier in the year, due to covid.

14 teams tried their luck, in a bid to win the coveted trophy. With last year's winners Neil Casey and myself not entered, a new pairings name would appear in the trophy for 2022.

5 teams qualified for post section, with Barrie Leslie & Joe Jenks drawing last year's runners up, Alanna Moffitt & Hayden Sheppard in the first round. Alanna (finally getting some time away from the shop) and Hayden (our Junior Singles representative) combined superbly to get the win, 10-5.

The semis saw Steve Preddy and Jason Barclay from Paretai prove far too strong for Christine King & Tineka Geers of SOTC, running away with a 15-1 victory. In the other semi, the other Paretai pair of Alanna & Hayden had a closer encounter with Lawrence team, Eileen Grant & Anna Utting but getting the 'W' 11-7 to set up a club, and family final.

The final didn't disappoint. Both Jase and Hayden were nutting the jack with regularity, making their respective skips really earn the points they scored by shifting each others bowls, or moving the kitty their own. Scoring was tit for tat with Steve and Alanna demonstating to the gathered onlookers why they're two of the best exponents of the game in our region.

It wasn't until the second last end that Steve and Jase showed a minor chink in their armour, allowing Alanna to capitslise on the only mistake of the game, and forcing Steve into an 'in or out' run shot. This unfortunately didn't come off for him, running narrow and dropping a 4 on that end to go 3 down going into the last.

This setback was always going to be a tall order to claw back, but the lads shrugged of the setback and showed some class to sit two shots with one bowl in hand. Steve's last bowl of the day fell just short of forcing an extra end and resigning his sister yet another runner up in this event.

Congratulations Alanna and Hayden on the 10-9 win in a great final, to finish off a great day's bowls.

Paretai 2 x 4 x 2 Pairs

Sunday 26 June at SOTC

Many thanks to the 14 teams who turned out today to the Paretai 2 x 4 x 2 Pairs Tournament at the South Otago T&C.

Games were played on a points system with a Power Play end nominated for each team by the controller, as well as the inclusion of a "Power Bowl". Each team had their Power Bowl (Yellow for Brown and Orange for Black) to use at their discretion during each end. This made for some interesting scoring, especially if your bowl was in the count during your Power Play end too! One team racked up a '24' in this scenario!!

A great afternoons bowls with heaps of fun .... and stress!

1st - Chris Moffitt & Molly Paterson

2nd - Russell Copland & Maureen Little

3rd - Laura Laughton & Jock Peoples

Big thanks to our sponsors, and especially Shona Preddy for all her work in getting the teams organised, finding players to fill these, and ensuring everyone was well feed and watered.

South Otago v Otago

Sunday 1 May in Dunedin

South Otago played Otago on Sunday 1 May in the annual Sportsmanship Cup fixture.

South Otago had a rough start, dropping all the opening Fours matches and winning only 4 of the 12 Leads/Seconds Singles, to be behind the 8 ball from the get go.

A couple of stronger showings in the Skips/Thirds Singles as well as the Pairs saw the gap reduce a little to 50-34 at lunch.

After ther break, things were fairly even going through the Fours and Leads/Seconds Singles, but Otago showed their strength to pull away in the Skips/Thirds Singles, following this with a very strong 20-4 Pairs round, running out winners 111-59.

Of the South Otago players, debutant Stephen Ray had 4 wins, including winning both his Singles matches.

Full results can be found under Representative Teams and Results tab, above.

Super Weekend results

A fantastic effort from our two South Otago representative teams at the Super Weekend in Christchurch.

Our Masters Four's team of Ian Bennett, Nola Anderson, Graeme Greer and Raylene Greer gave themselves every chance, winning two of their three pool games to only miss out on qualifying for the semis on a countback of ends.

With three of the four teams finishing on two wins each, the semis finalists were decided on ends and points differential. The first up 2-13 loss to Wanganui is potentially what cost our team their semis spot. The team beat Bush Ruahine and the eventual winner North Wellington in pool play, which was a big scalp.

A soild effort, especially going into this event with very limited playing time under their belts.

Molly Paterson, playing in her first Junior Singles Finals qualified for post section, winning her first three pool matches comfortably. Molly then drew a bye in the first round after qualifying which meant she met Nikita Blair from Canterbury in the Quarters. In a tight tussle, Molly came out on top 12-9 to set up a Semi final clash with the in-form Nathan Trowell of Poverty Bay East Coast.

Even though Nathan (the eventual championship winner) came out on top in the Semi final, Molly has certainly announced her arrival on the representative scene with her performances over the competition.

Congratulations Molly on an outstanding achievement!

Also of note, former South Otago junior Ryan McCaughan (now playing for Otago) took out the Junior Singles Plate event. Good stuff Ryan!
