U10 Rookie

U10s is a domestic, non-competition, development grade that is newly introduced by us this year. It is a gap year between T-Ball and U11 Competition Softball which will be run by Waiuku Softball Club on a Friday evening alongside the T-Ball grades.

This grade will not have training or set ‘coaches’ with group chats and line ups (although you will be put into a team of course so you get to know your teammates and make new friends). These teams will be supported by our U15 players and you - the parents - running the skills! Each week we will have a skill to learn and practice for about 20 minutes, then into a game against the other U10 team.

Kids here will learn and rotate positions on the diamond, be encouraged to ‘play the out’ at the bases, tag live runners and hit off a pitched ball as well as off the tee. Everyone will bat through the order at their turn (no 3 outs, side away) and have heaps of fun learning bat and ball skills.

  1. Start with Skills for 20 minutes, then a game of 2 bats/2 fields per team
  2. On the first at bat- the kids can hit off a tee if the want to.  All players bat through the order, regardless of how many outs are taken by the fielding team.  On the second at bat - the kids can hit off a pitched ball (parent to lob a ball over the plate).
  3. No strike outs.  If the batter is having trouble on a pitched ball they can use the tee again on their second at bat
  4. No walks
  5. No Stealing bases
  6. Teams to have even number of fielders, ideally it will be 9 - however extra players can be disbursed in the outfield.  Only 6 players infield at all times (including pitcher/catcher positions)
  7. Outs can be taken:  Batted ball beats the runner to 1st base, any live runner is tagged by a fielder with the ball, caught out on the full.
  8. Double outs, obstruction, interferences do NOT apply - instead these are coachable moments but no one gets out or advances on plays.
  9. No umpires required
