Almost everything you learn at Pony Club is based on safety - for both the welfare of the rider and their pony. The coaches and committee at WTPC consider the welfare of it's members as the top priority.
Please read the NZPCA Minimum Standards of Medical cover

In line with NZPCA expectations, there will be a qualified level 2 First Aid person at every rally, team practice, Camp or function organised by West Taieri Pony Club - no exceptions.

Our aim is to encourage participation NOT create barriers, but this will not come at the expense of rider safety or horse welfare.

Here are some examples of how WTPC implement safety proceedures at rallies;

  • Gear is checked prior to every rally, riders will be asked to remove all jewelry and rectify any gear that does not meet the safety standards required. Coaches are happy to help & advise less experienced families.
  • Lean rein jumping is never permitted.
  • Riders will remain on a lead at the coaches request.
  • If a coach believes a pony is unsound, lame or in distress of any kind, the rider will be asked to dismount immediately.
  • Sometimes a pony's behaviour can impact on not only the safety of it's own rider but also others in the group. This will be managed by the coach to ensure the safety of everyone.
  • Sometimes a riders poor or unsafe behaviour can impact on other riders in the group. This rider may be asked to leave.

Cruelty or excessive disciplining of any horse will not be tollerated. For example; excessive whipping or spurring, yanking the horses mouth, over schooling, etc. Basically, if a horse is being distressed by an action that has no possible positive outcome, the rider will be asked to put him away. Riders in breach should expect a Yellow report See here.
