The WSSSA Executive have engaged the Alert Level 2 protocols for Secondary School sport, including and importantly, the guidance for NO Spectators at Waikato Secondary School Sport Competitions and Events.

In line with Ministry of Health recommendations, please remember:

  • Wash hands regularly. Sanitise when entering and leaving the facility. Cough / sneeze into your elbow.
  • Sanitisation is important – clean gear before and after
  • Maintain physical distancing of 1m when not playing sport.
  • Please stay home if you are sick or unwell.

12 AUGUST 2020

Just a quick update with the limited info I do have. With the recent change to level 2, lunchtime sport/house competitions aren't impacted as this is within our own 'School Bubble'. All other sport i.e. Weekend and weekday local competition fixtures are currently being reviewed and we suspect we will have a clear answer by Friday. The 100 mass gathering guideline applies for these events so RSO's (Regional Sports Organisations) will have to manage and report on what this will look like for us.

Our main priority through the alert levels is to continue to practice good hygience measures and contact trace; so we resort back to our best practice using Vistab for coach/manager sign in and Enrolmy for team contact tracing.

Many thanks for your support as we near the half way mark of the 3rd quarter.

24 JUNE 2020

If you managed to attend our info sessions you will know what your season looks like and while there are subtle differences among codes, for the large majority, the Winter Sport season begins next term and will extend for the entire duration of Term 3. So in effect, everyone will have a 10 week season. Registrations for the Winter Season are drawing to a close so if you have yet to register, please do so asap and see the Teacher in Charge of your sport.

05 JUNE 2020

It's great to see teams training again, with restrictions lifted to allow mass gatherings of 100 and the curtains likely to raise even further on Monday, opportunities are looking very promising for sport.

We hope to see teams begin grading games for some sports on the 27th June.

Stay tuned and check your emails for updates regarding your specific sport which will come from each of the Teachers in Charge.

Who can't wait for sport to resume!?! For the guidelines surrounding sport, active recreation, water sports and play at the different government alert levels click here.

The board of School Sport NZ, in partnership with National Sporting Organisations (NSO’s) and event providers, has announced that due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19, the National Calendar of Sanctioned Events will be further suspended until 20th July, the beginning of Term 3.

19 MARCH 2020

Kia Ora,

Yesterday we received news from a handful but not all NSO's that sports training/trials/musters are suspended until 18 APR.

As a school we want to provide equity and consistency among codes that have yet to follow suit and have therefore decided to blanket this approach across all sports.

Therefore, there will be no sports training, call back trials or musters for the remainder of the term and this will be reviewed at the beginning of next term.

For the sake of students' physical and mental health, we recommend athletes are encouraged to continue to be active in their own time.

National Sports Tournaments Suspended - To Be Reviewed 6 APR.

Hot off the press from Sport NZ (10-mins ago):

Following the government announcement today banning gatherings and events of 500 or more and in conjunction with NSOs with events scheduled this term, the board of School Sport NZ has confirmed that all events on the School Sport NZ national calendar are suspended.

This decision will be reviewed on Monday 6th April. Some events where alternative dates are not possible will be cancelled, others may be postponed and we will work with NSOs to make announcements in due course.

The government directive banning mass gatherings of over 500 people automatically causes the cancellation or postponement of a number of events in the next 2 weeks.

With so many big events automatically suspended the level of uncertainty has the potential to significantly disrupt attendance at all events.

In making this decision to suspend events on the School Sport NZ national calendar both School Sport NZ and NSOs agree that the paramount factor is the health and safety of students, staff and community volunteers.

The current environment already features a number of individual schools cancelling their own events such as sport exchanges and camps and making decisions limiting travel and participation.

Events on the School Sport NZ national calendar feature schools travelling from all over New Zealand and as such present a potentially heightened risk of wider community spread by comparison to regional or local events.

Medical advice is that the risk of transmission is low at community level, where there has been no person-to-person spread, but significantly higher in situations in which airports, air-travel and hotels are involved as characterised by events on the School Sport NZ national calendar.

While student participants are registered, the ‘un-ticketed’ nature of events on the national calendar make it extremely difficult to contact trace as other attendees are not registered.

The close personal contact nature of sport carries a heightened risk of person to person transfer.

Regional bodies will need to consider their own circumstances in relation to their regional and local events.
