Norwest School Tournament

A bit of history

Kumeu Cricket Club has successfully been running the Northwest Cricket Tournament since 2012. We have had more than 250 children participating in a single tournament.

Tournament dates

Year 5 & 6 -

Year 7 & 8 -

Year 9 & 11 -

General Information and FYIs

Please aim to arrive at Huapai Domain by 9:20am for a brief managers’ meeting so we can start the first round at 9:40am.

There will be a tuck shop available at the clubrooms (EFTPOS available).

There is no official lunch break during the tournament. However, teams will have opportunities to eat between innings, and batting teams may eat while waiting for their turn to bat.

Parents and teachers, please ensure your team knows where their next game is being played ahead of time so we can minimise delays between games. All fields will be clearly marked.

How do we register our teams?

Please register your teams by clicking on the following - Team registrations.

Team information

Each school may enter up to two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams. If you have additional teams, please let us know and we will try to accommodate them. If you do not have enough players for a full team, boys and girls may be combined. Any combined team will be entered into the boys’ draw.

All teams must be entered by the cut-off date (TBC). A confirmation email will be sent to the nominated contact. If you do not receive a confirmation email, your entry may not have been received. Please follow this up before the cut-off date, as late entries will not be accepted.

Each team must have a supervisor such as a teacher or parent (for example, three teams require three supervisors). Supervisors must be prepared to score or umpire if required. The club will do its best to provide scorers and umpires, but if none are available a volunteer from the teams must step in. If no volunteer is available, the game may be abandoned and points shared.

All teams must bring a first aid kit.

Scoring, Game Details and Draw

Games will be scored using paper scorecards, main scores will then be uploaded to PlayHQ. The draw and pitch assignments will also be managed through PlayHQ, including semi-finals and finals.

These will be available from TBC.

Please follow the draw and pitch allocations shown on PlayHQ, as last-minute changes may occur due to teams withdrawing. We recommend checking the draw online regularly and using it as the main reference if you are unsure about when or where your game is scheduled.

Teams

Games are played with a maximum of 8 players on the field at one time. If your team has more than 8 players, no more than 8 are permitted on the field at any given time. No additional overs can be bowled or batted to compensate for additional players. Please speak with the opposition team on how this will be handled.

Equipment

All equipment, including bats, balls and stumps, will be provided by the club. Personal equipment may not be used in the game, as this ensures fairness between teams and players, as some bats are bigger and heavier which means balls can be hit harder and further.

Fielding set-up

Fielders will rotate clockwise to save time. If you prefer a set order, please arrange players anti-clockwise starting from your first bowler. To see an example of how to set up the fielding team - Fielding Set-up document.

Length of the game

Each innings will be limited to eight overs. Games are timed at forty minutes in total, with twenty minutes per innings. If a game cannot be completed within the allotted time, points will be shared.

It is important to keep play moving without disruption. Have the next batting pair ready, ensure the fielding team knows their positions, and rotate fielders in the correct direction. Being prepared in advance will help games run smoothly and on time.

Bowling

Every player will bowl one over. Bowlers should do their best to bowl with a straight arm, avoiding throwing or underarm deliveries. Coaches or umpires should explain this at the start of the game.

If the first ball bowled per over is a wide, it will not count toward the score. If further wides are bowled, the umpire or coach will step in to guide the bowler. Wides will count as two points to the batting team. If a team is short of players, the next player in line will automatically rotate back in.

Outs

Batters are out if caught, bowled or run out. There are no no-balls, stumpings or hit wickets. Five runs will be deducted from the batting team for every dismissal.

Batting

Each batting pair will face two overs (twelve balls), and balls should be shared as evenly as possible between the pair. If a team is short on players, the preference is that the batter with the lowest score may bat again.

If the ball stops short of the batter, they have one chance to hit it and the fielders must leave it for that attempt. Once the ball is hit, normal playing rules apply such as run outs and catches. If the ball passes the batter, the free hit does not apply.

There are no boundaries. Players must run, with a maximum of four runs per shot.

Team spirit

All players are encouraged to support and cheer for their teammates. Good behaviour, teamwork and tidiness of the playing area will be taken into consideration by the umpire or scorer. Each team will receive a score out of five for team spirit, and the team with the highest score will be awarded the Team Spirit Award.

Boys tournament

Games are played with a maximum of 8 players per team per game. Boys will play 8 overs per innings. 4 pairs will bat for 2 overs each. All 8 players will bowl.

Girls tournament

Games are played with a maximum of 8 players per team per game. Girls will play 8 overs per innings.4 pairs will bat for 2 overs each. All 8 players will bowl.
