Year 0 - Year 6
After listening to the feedback we received from our community, Netball Rotorua has moved our Future Fern competition to Term 1 and Term 4, thereby making netball a summer experience for our tamariki. ​​​​​​​

We have an option for teams to play Year 5/6 6v6 or 7v7.

Netball Rotorua runs the Woolworths Future Ferns competition on a Monday afternoon from 4pm to 6.30pm for 6 weeks in term 1 and 6 weeks in term 4.

Why all the modifications?

The game has been modified to suit age, size, and ability over time to ensure the game meets the needs of the players and grows/changes as the players grow.

FutureFERNS aims to provide the players with a fun and safe environment and maximise opportunities to participate. The program encourages the development of their skills and provides a progressive introduction to Netball, developing a lifelong love of the game.

Year 1 & 2

This level introduces Netball to 5 and 6-year-olds. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and ball skills. The 20–minute game that follows the initial skill session is played on one-third of a full–size court, by teams of four, with the emphasis on equal participation. Modified equipment is used.

Year 3 & 4

The focus for this age group is to develop further skills, while still playing on a reduced court size with modified equipment. The format promotes lots of scoring, lots of touches on the ball and fun for all participants. With five players in each team and rotating positions, this ensures everyone has an equal chance to develop.

Year 5 & 6

Netball continues to be modified for players of this age. The focus is on learning and continued development of fundamental movement and basic Netball skills. The 6v6 game is fast and provides players with lots of touches on the ball to enhance skill development, engagement and enjoyment.
