Chaplain

Rev. Solimata Manihi Tereora

Between 1978 and 1979 a group of young Tongarevans throwing a rugby ball around decided to elect leaders for their small team. Victor Martin was elected President, Tangaroa-Ariki Tai Secretary and Haireka Isaia for Treasurer. This was to be known as the birth of our sports club. A few weeks later, Tangaroa-Ariki relocated to Sydney and his role was quickly filled by a short stocky young first-five.

Known as one of the originals, a now older and wiser Rev. Solimata Tereora recalls some of the highlights of his term as Secretary of the Penrhyn Sports Club. Taking the team to Hastings in the early 80’s, then to Tokoroa in 86 to prepare themselves for the 1987 Tour to Rarotonga where they played and won against Atiu, Mauke, Mangaia, Tupapa, Arorangi, Avatiu and finally going down to Rarotonga in the Final.

He retired in the early 90’s and he is considered the longest serving Secretary for the club.
To date, he is still a dedicated member of the club and we would like to acknowledge not only his loyalty but his continuing chaplin support with prayers and visits to members within the club.
