Para Riding (Para Equestrian)

What Is Para Equestrian?

Para Equestrian is an inclusive discipline supported by Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ) that allows riders with physical disabilities to train and compete in dressage on equal terms.

Athletes can compete within their internationally recognised Para Equestrian classification grade, or alongside able-bodied riders in standard dressage events. The sport is accessible, empowering, and offers progression from grassroots to elite-level international competition.

Classification & Grades

Before entering Para competitions, all riders must be officially classified by an ESNZ-recognised Para Equestrian classifier. This process assesses functional mobility, coordination, and riding ability.

Riders are then assigned one of five FEI grades:

  • Grade I – Severe impairment; walk-only tests

  • Grade II – Significant impairment; walk and some trot

  • Grade III – Walk, trot, canter; limited lateral work

  • Grade IV – Mild impairment; includes lateral movements

  • Grade V – Least impaired; full paces and advanced movements

Each grade has its own tailored dressage tests designed to match the rider's ability.

Compensating Aids & Adaptive Equipment

Riders may use compensating aids to support their ability to ride safely and effectively. These are approved during classification and listed on a rider's Para Equestrian profile.

Common aids include:

  • Loop, ladder, or elastic reins

  • Voice commands

  • Modified saddles, stirrups, or mounting aids

  • One-handed whips, handlebar reins, and balance straps

Each rider receives a Para Equestrian ID card that must be shown at ESNZ competitions.

Competition Pathway

Para Equestrian offers structured opportunities at every level:

  • Training & Club Days

  • Regional Competitions

  • National Championships

  • Horse of the Year Show

  • FEI International Events & Paralympic Pathways

Tests are matched to rider grades and can be ridden from memory or called aloud (where permitted).

Coaching & Rider Development

Coaching for Para Equestrian riders focuses on:

  • Rider biomechanics and posture

  • Confidence and independence

  • Suitability of horse and tack

  • Competition preparation

  • Safety and goal setting

ESNZ offers access to Para-specific coaching, clinics, and development squads. Some riders may also qualify for national funding support or grants to assist with training, travel, and equipment.

Who Can Ride?

Para Equestrian is open to riders with permanent physical impairments. Common conditions include:

  • Neurological disorders (e.g. cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis)

  • Limb deficiency or amputation

  • Spinal injuries

  • Muscular conditions
