futureFERNS Juniors Year 5 & 6

(9-10 year olds)

Specifically for Year 5 & 6 players (9-10 year olds) which is designed to be fun and maximise participation for all players.  Focus on this group is on learning the basics of netball.  Players will play 6v6 modified game format and will be encouraged to try all positions on the court throughout the season.


SEASON INFORMATION

Registration: Open to Year 5 & 6 players

Length of competition: 12 weeks

Start date: 2nd May

Finish Date: 15th Aug - FINALS

Save Date: 22nd Aug

Session: Saturday


GRADING

Grading Weeks: 1st May and 8th May - all teams will play two grading games for the first two weeks.

Grading games = 2 x 8 minute halves + 2 min half time break.

11.45am: Grading Game 1

Break 20 minutes

12.15pm: Grading Game 2

** no reserves or casual players can play in grading games


COMPETITION FORMAT

Competition Type: Round Robin + Semi Final & Finals.

Game Times: ​​​​​​​all games played over one round. 

Round 1: 11.20am (4 x 8 min quarters with 2 min breaks). 

After Round 1 Draw is completed - teams may be regraded so the centre reserves the right to do this in order to create a more balanced competition for teams. This is TBC.

All Year 5&6 teams will play 6v6 format.

10.45am - Coach & Umpires Meeting (outside control Court 5)

10.50am - NetballSmart Warmup & Skills (25 mins)

11.15am: Game Set Up / Get Ready on Court

11.20am : Game Starts - 1st quarter (8 mins)

11.28am: Break (2 mins)

11.30am: 2nd quarter (8 mins)

11.38am: Break (2mins)

11.40am: 3rd Quarter (8 mins)

11.48am: Break (2 mins)

11.50am: 4th Quarter (8mins)

11.58am: Finish


GAME DAY FORMAT

  • Coach and Umpire Meeting
  • NetballSmart Dynamic Warmup (10 mins)
  • Skill Development  (15 mins)
  • Coaches are encouraged to teach a weekly skill following the futureFERNS resource booklet or online weekly skill
  • Transition / Get Ready (5 mins)
  • Game - 6 v 6 on full court
  •  4 x 8 min quarters with 2 min breaks
  • Games are officated by team umpire
  • Team Managers must stand together and use scoring app
  • Positions C | D | A
  • Rotation policy in place for players whereby each player is allowed to stay in one position for two weeks then must rotate to a new position.

Year 5 & 6 sessions are taught over a 9 week program that introduces players to different skills and activities each week. There are a number of key learning and coaching points and all the activities in each lesson are focussed on learning a particular skill specific to netball.

2026 SEASON - RULE INFORMATION​​​​​​​

UMPIRE RULES:

  • All Year 5 & 6 Grade Teams MUST supply their own Umpire for the Season. Payment of Umpires is between the Team and the Umpire.
  • KNC suggest paying Junior Umpires $10 per Game and Centre Qualified Umpires $20, as a guideline. Payment to Umpires MUST be made BEFORE the game starts.
  • All Umpires MUST wear a white t shirt or jumper.
  • All coaches & managers need to be up to date with all the updated 2025 umpires rules that where released last year.  Please check the UMPIRING TAB for helpful PDFs and videos which explain all the new rules that came into play.​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​RESERVE & EMERGENCY & CASUAL PLAYERS RULE:

  • Reserve / Player Up = a player who is already registered at KNC and plays in a lower grade and is requesting to play in a higher grade team. 
  • Reserve Players cannot be a reserve for teams who play in the same grade.
  • Reserve Player cannot play in a lower grade if they are in a higher graded team. 
  • Reserve Players are not permitted in grading games.
  • Online Reserve / Player Form must be submitted and approved prior to player taking the court.
  • No fee
  • Casual Player = not a registered player at KNC or at any other centre, is the same age as the Year grade of the team they are playing for.
  • Should only be used in special circumstances eg not enough team members due to illness, injury or tangi / funeral. 
  • Must pay $10.00 fee payable online payment prior to player taking the court.
  • Online Casual Form in sporty must be submitted and approved prior to player taking the court.
  • Emergency Player = a replacement player to replace a registered team member who has withdrawn or cannot play for the remaining season due to injury. (formal request via email must be sent to centre prior to this player taking the court). 
  • Online Emergency Form in sporty must be submitted and approvied prior to player taking the court.
  • New player will need to register and pay fees prior to playing. 

IMPORTANT INFO:

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​If a Reserve plays twice for the same team, on the third occasion they become a member of that team and cannot return to their orginal team for the remaining season. 

If requesting to add an additional team member AFTER registration - you must notify the netball centre and seek approval prior to that player taking the court. 

Any teams found playing non registered members or reserves and or casual players without approval, will result in a default and or loss of competition points. 

ONLINE COMPETITION FORMS:

Online forms (located under Competition Info) must be submitted and approval gained prior to a Reserve or Emergency/Casual Player taking the court.

Teams not following these rules and regulations will result in a default and or loss of competition points. 

    MALES IN NETBALL:

    In Year 5 to Year 8 School / Club and any Mixed Competitions:

    • A maximum of 3 males may play on court at any one time.
    • There is to be no more than 1 male in each third of the court i.e. Goal third (A), Centre third (C) and Defence third (D)
