Junior game format

Netball Rodney follows the 'futureFERNS' programme in the junior netball competition.

futureFERNS is Netball New Zealand’s official junior Netball programme. It offers four different year groups for the junior Netball programme.

futureFERNS progresses players though modified formats of Netball that recognises their stage of physical and mental development. The aim is not only to grow their Netball abilities but also to help with their overall physical literacy which includes confidence, motivation, knowledge and understanding and physical competence.

Year 1 & 2

Introduces Netball to 5 - 6 year olds. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and ball skills. The game that follows the preceding skill session is played on one third of a full sized court, by teams of four, with the emphasis on equal participation. Modified equipment is used. See website for more detail futureFERNS

Year 3 & 4

The focus for this age group is learning basic skills in a modified game of 5-a-side, using two-thirds of a Netball court. futureFERNS Year 3 & 4 is designed to be fast and fun, maximising participation. Five players in each team and rotating positions ensures everyone gets an equal chance to develop their skills.  See website for more detail futureFERNS

Years 5 & 6

The 6 v 6 game is fast and provides players with lots of touches on the ball to enhance skill development and enjoyment. With only three positions on court it means the game is less complicated for children and easier for coaches to ensure the players learn the skills relevant to all and to provide them with equal opportunities. See website for more detail futureFERNS
