Note - the summer athletics season will start in Term 3. Until then,  unfortuantely the only thing we offer is cross country trainings for older kids (7 and above). See below for details.

Cross county trainings

These are well underway and will run until the Aims Games in August. This is free for all aged 7 and above and you don't have to be registered. Parents are welcome to join in with their kids.

Trainings are:

- Mondays at Waipuna, 4 to 5pm

- Wednesdays at Fergusson Park, 4 to 5pm.

Please sign in when you arrive.

1 or 2 parents are needed to help each night, to run with the kids just to keep an eye on them :-) Please come with running gear including warm clothes.

For more info, contact our cross country manager, Malcolm Taylor on 027 292 4411 or janmal@xtra.co.nz

Who we are

Bellevue Athletic Club is based at the Tauranga Domain and is one of the largest children’s athletics clubs in the Waikato/Bay Of Plenty region. We are a parent-run club that is not--for-profit. We cater for children up to the age of 14 with a Mini Club (1 - 6 yrs) and Junior Club (7 to 14 yrs). We mainly run a summer athletics programme but do offer cross country training in the winter (more detail below).

What we offer

We provide a welcoming, fun and well‑structured athletics programme for young athletes of all abilities. Our focus is on fun, participation, and helping young athletes learn and grow through athletics.

On club nights, athletes are grouped by age. Each group follows a planned programme of activities, with events rotating weekly and across the season so everyone has multiple opportunities to try all disciplines.

Club night programmes

Mini Club (ages 1–6)

Mini Club is all about fun and movement in a friendly, supportive environment. Sessions include age‑appropriate running, jumping and throwing activities. Mini club runs on the grass field just to the north of the track at the domain.

Junior Club (ages 7–14)

Every week, our Junior club uses the fantastic all weather track at the domain and associated amenities like the long jump pits. We also use the photo finish facility at the domain each week to capture the race times for each athlete which is helpful for tracking their progression and capturing their personal bests (PBs).

Ages 7–9

For our younger juniors, we start with Run, Jump, Throw (RJT) fundamentals, following the Athletics New Zealand RJT programme. Sessions combine:

  • fun skill‑based activities

  • gradual introduction to real athletics events

For example, athletes might start with jumping games followed by doing actual long jump in the pits on the same night. After a few weeks of this, they then move to our normal format of 4 events each night (2 track and 2 field). Events we provide are: shot put, discus, long jump, 60m, 100m,  200m, and relays +  800m for 9 yr olds.

Ages 10–14

From the outset, athletes participate in our normal athletics format. Throughout the season they will participate in each event multiple times which provides a broad exposure to athletics while continuing to develop skills. Events we provide are: shot put, discus, long jump, high jump, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, and relays + hurdles for 12-14 yr olds.

Athlete support and coaching

Each age group is run by a volunteer parent team leader, helping ensure the club remains affordable and community‑focused. While team leaders are not professional coaches, they are:

  • provided with coaching resources

  • in-person coaching courses are made available

  • guided by club coordinators

Many of our team leaders have been so for a number of seasons and are now able to guide athletes well. We support any new team leaders with the above.

To further support our athletes, professional coaches are brought in at various times during the season, particularly early on, to work with each team leader and group. However this is limited so for those wanting more support, particulary individual coaching,  additional private or small‑group coaching options are available locally that are reasonably priced. We’re happy to provide recommendations.

Where and when?

The club operates at Tauranga Domain over the summer (October - March) on Tuesday evenings from 5:20pm -7:00pm.  All ages assemble in front of the grandstand at Tauranga Domain at 5:20pm. Junior Club stays on top field for their events until approximately 7:00pm and Mini Club compete on lower fields, finishing up a bit earlier around 6:30pm.
