Celebrating Our Cultures
Ōtāhuhu Intermediate School is proud of the rich cultural diversity within our kura. Our cultural groups give students the opportunity to celebrate their identity, learn from others, build confidence and share their culture through performance.
Students can take part in a range of cultural groups, including groups such as Kapa Haka, Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands, Niuean and Indian cultural groups.
These groups help students connect with language, song, dance, movement, stories, traditions and values that are important to their culture and community.
Practice and Commitment
Our cultural groups practise every Wednesday afternoon. During this time, students work with staff, tutors and student leaders to learn their items, build confidence and prepare for performances.
Being part of a cultural group teaches students commitment, teamwork, discipline and pride. Students learn to support one another, take responsibility for their role, and represent their culture and school with mana.
Performances and Whānau Celebration
Throughout the year, our cultural groups perform during different Language Weeks and school events. These performances are a special way for students to share their learning and celebrate the cultures within our kura.
Once a year, our cultural groups also perform for whānau at a special cultural celebration. This event gives families the chance to come together, support their tamariki, and celebrate the hard work, pride and passion of our students.
Our cultural groups are an important part of life at Ōtāhuhu Intermediate. They help create a kura where students feel proud of who they are, connected to others, and confident to stand tall in their culture.
