Bowls South Canterbury Junior Singles

Six players entered this competition, three from West End, one from Kia Toa, one from Temuka, and one from Geraldine.  These are players who have been playing five years and under.

This year there were only two entries in the Development Singles (6-8 years). Both entries were from the same club, so they decided not to play.  It is a shame there were so few entries as we have some very good 6-8 year players out there.

Junior Singles:

Rd 1: saw Ruth Parker (West End) play Chrissy Herbert, (Kia Toa).  Chrissy got away to a great start and was 7 nil up after five ends, Ruth scored 3 and unfortunately that was the only score she got, Chrissy then raced through to 21 after only 12 ends.  Lynn Hodges (West End) played Mel Reid (Temuka).  This was a great game, close all the way. At end 6 it was 4 all, Lynn then took off and scored 10 shots to Mel’s 5, which put the score at 13 to Lynn and 9 to Mel.  Lynn scored 4 on the next 7 ends while Mel scored 8 to be 17 all.  Mel then scored 4 to reach 21 shots and Lynn remained on 17.  Fiona Davies (West End) played Carol Fowler (Geraldine) and after 9 ends it was Fiona who was up 13 -4, Lynn, then scored 3 and no more, while Fiona scored 8 to reach 21 and Carol on 7.

Rd 2:  Chrissy played Fiona, and this was a game similar to the last one, with Chrissy leading with 2 x 3 shots and Fiona scoring a 2, and 2 x singles to trail 4-6.  Fiona scored 2 shots while Chrissy scored 7 to go 13-7 up.  Fiona scored 1 more shot and Chrissy scored another 9 to win 21-7.  Lynn played Ruth, and Ruth scored 1 on the first end, Lynn scored 11 on next 6 ends, (11-1), Ruth scored another 2, Lynn scored a 2, 4 and 1 to be 18-3 ahead, Lynn scored another 3 to be 21 while Ruth scored 6 to take her to 9.  Carol and Mel had a great game as both players are well matched.  Mel scored 4 single shots to be 4-0, Carol scored 9 shots to Mel’s 10 shots to lead 14 – 9, Carol scored 5 shots to get to 14, Mel scored 6 shots, to be 21, and Carol stayed on 14.

Rd 3:  Ruth played Mel, and this was a see-saw game until Mel reached 11 and Ruth reached 10.  Mel scored 10 shots on the last 6 ends, and Ruth stayed on 10, Mel won with a score of 21-10.  Chrissy played Carol, and Carol got off to a 15-2 lead, Chrissy picked up 6 shots to Carol’s 3, (18-8) to Carol, Chrissy picked up 4 shots, to reach 12, and Carol scored 3 to win 21-12.  Fiona played Lynn and this was a very close game between club mates after 11 ends the score was 13 to Fiona and 10 to Lynn.  Lynn scored a single, Fiona scored 2 singles, Lynn scored a 3 and 2, to lead 16 -15, Fiona scored 4 shots (19), Lynn scored 2 (18), Fiona scored 1 single and a 3 to beat Lynn (who scored a single shot) 21-19. At this stage there was only 1 qualifier, Mel Reid, but 2 others, Chrissy Herbert and Fiona Davies had to play to try and qualify (both had 2 wins).

Rd 4: Mel played Chrissy, and this was a good game, close most of the way, 2 all after 4 ends, 8-9 to Mel after 11 ends, Chrissy reached 15 shots to Mel’s 11 shots, Chrissy picked up 3 more shots for a total of 18 while Mel scored 10 shots to win 21-18.  Fiona also needed this game to qualify. This was a game which often happens, one needs it to qualify, the other players can’t qualify and as happens the one who can’t qualify, wins the game.  Ruth started well and was 16 -1 up before Fiona got started and then picked up a single, a 3 and a 2 (7) while Ruth went ahead with 2 lots of 2 shots and a single to win 21 -7.

This gave Mel Reid (Temuka) overall winner of the Junior Centre Singles.  A second day was not needed.

Temuka were thanked for hosting and thanks were extended to the greenkeeper and Markers.
