The Women's Champion of Champion Junior Singles was played at the Timaru green last Saturday.

There were 6 clubs entered - Fairlie, Kia Toa, Geraldine, Pleasant Point, Waimate, and Temuka.  All players had to reach 21 to win a game and was a knockout system.

Rd 1:   Carol Fowler   (Geraldine) played Linda Fowler (Pl.Point).  Carol, a very seasoned player got off to a great start being 13-3 up after 9 ends and didn’t really let Linda into the game, winning  21-7.  Game 2:  Janette Allnutt (Waimate) played Mel Reid (Temuka). It was a closer game with Mel winning  21-11.  Fairlie and Kia Toa had byes.

Semi-Final game:  Shelly McGrath (Fairlie) played Chrissy Herbert  (Kia Toa). Chrissy got off to a flyer and after 8 ends it was 14-2. Shelly reached 11, while Chrissy scored 6 shots to be sitting on 20 for 6 ends, while Mel got to 16. On the next end Chrissy scored the one she needed to win 21-16.

2nd Semi-final game:  Carol Fowler played Mel Reid and this was a good game. Carol reached 10 shots to Mel’s  4 after 10 ends, and while Carol forged ahead scoring 6 shots to Mel’s 8, this put the scores at 16-12 after 20 ends to Carol. Mel scored another 6 shots to be 18, not enough to hold out Carol, scoring 5 shots and winning 21-18.

Final: This was between Carol Fowler (Geraldine) and Chrissy Herbert (Kia Toa), and it was a great game according to spectators. After 11 ends it was 9 all.  Carol scored on the next 5 ends to be 18-9 up. Chrissy then scored 5 on the next 4 ends, to reach 14. On the last 5  ends it was 20 all and Carol was the lucky one to get the winning 1 shot to win 21-20. Two good  players who put on a great show for a final.

Thanks were expressed to Timaru for hosting the event, markers and Controller.

Nigel Mobberley was in outstanding form to completely dominate the Champion of Champion Junior Singles played at Kia Toa Bowling Club.

Mobberley becomes just the second bowler in South Canterbury to win the title three times, joining Merv Davey from Temuka who won this event from 2000 to 2003.

In the final Mobberley played first year bowler Mike Ross, who showed real class in beating South Canterbury representatives Andrew Bell then Barry Black before coming up against Mobberley.
