Athletes
Wellington College Rowing athletes include both rowers and coxswains, each contributing to the performance, culture, and spirit of the club. Athletes are grouped by age and experience to ensure fair competition and appropriate development. Age eligibility is determined as of 1 January, which falls mid-season.
Novice Athletes
Athletes in their first year of rowing are referred to as novices.
At regattas, novices typically compete in:
Under 15 (U15) events – for athletes aged under 15 as of 1 January.
Novice Under 18 (N18) events – for first-year rowers aged under 18.
Some athletes may be eligible to row in U15 events for two seasons, depending on their birthdate.
Athletes may only compete in N18 events for one season, regardless of age.
Junior and Senior Athletes
After their novice year, athletes progress into junior and senior categories:
U16 – for athletes aged under 16 as of 1 January.
U17 – for athletes aged under 17.
U18 – for athletes aged under 18.
Senior – typically includes experienced U18 athletes and those competing in open-age events.
These categories align with national regatta structures and allow athletes to compete at appropriate levels based on age and experience.
Novice Squad Selection
The Novice Squad is selected in September, following the completion of the Learn to Row (LTR) programme.
Selection is based on participation, attitude, and potential shown during LTR sessions.
Club Captain
The Club Captain is a senior athlete elected by the rowers at the start of each season.
This role supports communication between athletes, coaches, and the committee, and helps foster team spirit and uphold club values.
The Club Captain may assist with welcoming new members, coordinating team events, and promoting a positive and inclusive culture. The Club Captain also participates in committe meetings.
