The rowing training and regatta season for returning rowers spans seven months, officially starting 1st September and culminating in March with the North Island Secondary Schools Championships (NISSC).
Some crews—typically excluding novice rowers—may be selected to compete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship (Maadi Cup), held in late March.
The full season calendar will be issued to all parents via email.
The rowing season is structured into 6 key phases; each season the coaches develop a training program that spans the season preparing rowers:
Active Recovery - April to June - 3 months
Not part of the official season - Recovery period following major competitions.
No rowing, but continued exercise to maintain fitness.
Boys encouraged to focus on winter sports.
Pre-Season - July to August – 2 months
Winter sport still takes priority but we will run optional sessions for those boys who would like to take it up.
Learn To Row - mid-August to early-September – 4 weeks
"Learn to Row" programme to select the novice squad.
Early Competition (September to December) – 4 months
Spring Camp in Whanganui during the October holidays.
Labour Weekend day trips for additional training.
Participation in local regattas, Whanganui regattas, and the Karapoti Christmas Regatta at Karapiro in mid-December.
Main Competition (January to February) – 2 months
Summer Camp during the Christmas holidays.
Waitangi Weekend day trips for intensive preparation.
Competing in the KR2 regatta at Karapiro and the McLachlan Shield (Wellington Schools Competition) in Wellington.
Major Competition (March) – 1 month
Race training intensity tapers as rowers prepare for NISS at Karapiro.
Select crews compete in Maadi Cup at either Lake Karapiro or Lake Ruataniwha.
