Active whānau participation is crucial to the club's success. Parents/whānau are expected to support their rowers and the club in various ways, from transport, to camp assistance, providing baking, assisting the committee, and fundraising.
Each whānau is expected to help at some level each year
At the start of each season we will ask for volunteers for camps and regattas and also try to have reserve volunteers in case back-ups are needed. The form sent for volunteer sign up is the best way for the club to be able to plan, please contact wcrowing@gmail.com for any questions.
To maintain the level of pastoral care provided to the boys on camp and regattas, it is WCRC policy to have 6 adults on camp every night that we have a full squad, 5 adults (minimum) if one squad is not present and 4 adults (minimum) if two squads are not present.
Each camp or regatta team needs to have experienced helpers (preferably 2) and male helpers (preferably 2). If we do not get enough parent/whānau volunteers, some squads may not be able to attend the camp.
Prior to the regatta the volunteering teams will get together over a coffee or video call to enable those involved to understand more about the tasks, responsibilities, expectations and be able to ask questions.
Each club (and school) must supply a certain number of volunteers for each local regatta. The names of a club/school’s volunteers must be submitted with the school’s race entries. Entries won’t be accepted unless a school/club supplies their full complement of volunteers.
The jobs are either on-water (umpire boat-driving) or land based. The land-based jobs vary in terms of experience needed; the Starter role is a technical position and WRA is keen to train people up, regatta control requires some understanding of rowing and how regatta is run. All the other jobs are straightforward and easy to teach on the day. No one will be dropped into the deep end, and there is always oversight.
If there’s a particular job you’d like to do, please let us know.
Enthusiastic and positive support for your son, his crew and the other Wellington College crews from the shore during regattas is very much encouraged. At Lake Karapiro, the WCRC marquee is the base where the boys can refuel and rest. It is also a meeting point for boys and parents. Parents/whānau are not permitted in the boat park at regattas as it is a coach and crew only space. A debrief usually occurs after a race before the boys make their way back to the supporters’ marquee.
For whānau to know what's going on at regattas, the "Row it" website provides race day rowing schedules, other information and results. You can filter for Wellington School, or for your rower and it enables you to track progress of crews on regatta days and statistics over the season www.rowit.co.nz
If parents wish to make alternative travel arrangements for their son to or after the regatta, they must inform the coaches and parent helpers. Rowers must not leave a regatta or camp with the Lead parent or pastoral care aware - otherwise this will be classified as an incident.
Fundraising events are essential to raise capital for replacement of equipment and to reduce the operating costs that need to be covered by the rower’s subscription. The Committee appreciates any assistance you can offer with the organization of fundraising events throughout the season. If you have any ideas or opportunities for fundraising, please contact the WCRC Committee – wcrowing@gmail.com
The Club has many interesting sponsorship opportunities and welcomes interest from potential sponsors. Being associated with a sport that is so rewarding and reflects such dedication, focus, discipline and achievement is a positive brand message. If you would like to understand more about the sport, sponsorship opportunities and how WCRC could work in partnership with you, please contact the WCRC Committee Chairperson – wcrowing@gmail.com
